November at the Trance Cafe – Newcastle and North East Hypnosis Practice and Supervision Group is Creating A Performance Mindset – Wednesday February 3rd.My good friend Kim Bull of Performing Excellence will host the evening.

High performers from sport, the arts, politics and business often have a certain way they think about their successes, and a different way of thinking about their errors or bad experiences.

We will use the thinking structure of successful performers to create a model for using past successes and learning experiences to create a positive mindset for the future. As well as having applications for performers, this is also a resource in therapy and change work where a positive mental attitude might be useful.

NLP Time Line – Manifesting A Worthy Future – Part Two

Here is the second of three parts of how to do a NLP Time Line. This was recorded at the Newcastle Clinical Hypnotherapy Diploma training in 2009 with one of the attendees. This is a direct follow on from the first video.

Clinical Hypnosis training in the North East of England and Newcastle starts in January and August each year.

Using the NLP Meta Model For Business – Part One

During my first NLP Trainer Trainer,  John Grinder presented a cut down version of the Meta-Model specifically for Business Applications. He Called it the Verbal Package. The updated model Directioning and Intelligent Questioning is presented on my six month Newcastle upon Tyne NLP Master Practitioner training courses.

This is a cut down version ( keeping it simple ) of the model presented in Grinders book, Precision.

It goes like this.

  1. Establish Rapport.
  2. Present the Relevancy Challenge.
  3. Challenge the Nouns.
  4. Challenge the Verbs.
  5. BackTrack.

Now I want to add an additional yet extremely important missing piece. Notice the absolutely essential new first step.
The model now becomes what I call the D.I.Q model (Directioning and Intelligent Questioning )

  1. Set your Outcome for this meeting / interaction and align with your Purpose.
  2. Establish Rapport.
  3. Introduce the Relevancy Challenge.
  4. Explore the unspecified Nouns.
  5. Explore the unspecified the Verbs.
  6. BackTrack what has been communicated and what has been understood.

The next instalment of DIQ will unpack the elements of this model.

Change Camp – October 24th

Something very special, completely innovative and unusual is happening again in the North East this year. In Newcastle upon Tyne, Gosforth and organised by Andy Hunt of Practical Wellbeing and Integrity NLP …

It’s called Change Camp.

This is something that will be of interest to Counsellors, NLP’s, Therapists, Solution Focused therapists, Hypnotherapists and Health Care professionals as well as anyone with an interest in personal growth and self development.

The first Change Camp of 2009 was a huge and overwhelming success in both bringing like minded people together to explore their mutual interests and even more importantly creating a burgeoning community of really amazing people.

And it is happening and open again for even more great things this coming October 24th.

This is the brain child of my excellent friend and colleague Andy Hunt and is the second un-conference in Newcastle upon Tyne that will attract people who want to change the(ir) world.

10 Hints & Tips for surviving a temporary recession – HT eight

ISS Propulsion Module (NASA)Image via WikipediaHere we are at Hint and Tip number eight. You have probably done a great deal of work, if you have done the exercises to be here in a fully participatory way.

You will have explored not just your goals but things like the consequences ( positive, negative and sameness ) of your changing situation. You have explored your outcome from differing perspectives and multiple ways in which expanding options could or could not take place.

The well formed outcome process ( Andy’s compass exercise ) may have given you more new information or some kind of realisation about what is really involved. You may even be consciously aware of how the language you use with yourself either verbally or non-verbally ( with or without sound ) can change the way you can experience your outcome in the future.

now, this is the part where you, yes, you! Begin the enrichment and enhancement of the deep desire and motivation to propel yourself to seeing it through.  See, it is ultimately ( as previous exercise may have shown you ) up to or down to you.

At this point the words aren’t really that important.  What is important is that you have an idea, a feeling, a representation, a sense of what this is really going to be like when you have it. That’s the VAKGO representation.

So here is the missing part from the well formed outcome process. What is it? That is going to start you and move you, pushing from one direction and pulling from the other that is going to make it much more possible that you get what you want.

This is in addition to the ecology ( personal congruency ) checks you have already done.

OK this is it.

Take your goal ( maybe the first one ) and ask yourself the following questions. Then answer it.  This is the beginning of honest and deeper propelling motivation.

Goal: What is important both to you and for you ( specific words from Dr. Christina Hall )  about fully achieving this goal?

Your answer “it is … X”

Having got some answer – ‘X’,

What is important about having ‘X’, that gets you what?

Your answer “it is … Y”

Having got some answer – ‘Y’,

What is important about having ‘Y’ what does that get you?

Your answer “it is … A”

Now, having put your goal into a much bigger context or bigger picture, I invite you to really think and give your full attention to what having ‘A’ in just the right and proper way your having ‘A’ is all about for you.

When you have got it and you have really got it, notice how you are feeling and especially having this realisation now notice how are you breathing… Breath it in and have it. Hold it for awhile… Relish the feeling, savour it.

This is your motivation… This is your motivation.

and now, having had this physical experience and remembering how you are breathing in this experience … and remembering it, now, let it go.

Shake it off… wiggle wiggle – That is BREAK STATE

After shaking it off, get it back, state ‘A’ recreate it … now … feel it, see it, smell it, taste it…

The easiest way is to replicate it, is your breathing, while remembering the ‘higher’ driving purpose and real importances of your outcome.

Lock it in, in your motivation, ‘A’ and connect this with your goal.

This deeply moving motivation will make your goal so much more possible. Having this fully and completely as you do now, what, as you think about it are your next steps…

10 Hints & Tips for surviving a temporary recession – HT Seven

Shifting Perspectives 2008The ability to change perspectives is one of the single most powerful tools there is. And the great news is that each and every one of us has this innate gift. Unfortunately we don’t always choose to use it though as is clearly being demonstrated in Israel and Gaza at the moment.

Children ( and some adults still ) have a wonderful ability to radically shift perspectives from what can appear to be one reality to another.  This ability in children may be because they haven’t yet developed rigid belief structures that prevent change and essentially close down possibilities.

For a moment think about your own thoughts, values and beliefs about the current conflict in Israel and Gaza. Now, if you can, think about it from a Hamas ‘freedom’ fighters perspective, what would you have to believe and value in order to operate this way? Now think about it from say an Israeli soldiers perspective, what would you have to value and believe to be true to act this way? Now come back to being yourself.

OK, now, if you found these two other world views uncomfortable, tricky, wonderful or impossible this is likely because they conflict or disagree with your own beliefs and values.  This is OK, this is not an attempt to begin world piece it is an illustration of beliefs and values in action, at work; yours.

Beliefs if you believe in them are like a glue holding the fabric of your reality together, if you like, the warp and the weft that keep things in place. And for most of the time this works really well.

In a simplistic world view each set of perspectives including your own are perfectly right and valid from the perspective of the individual. You may not agree or condone what is happening from your own perspective and this is about your own beliefs and values.

Loosening and softening limiting beliefs – Gaining new perspectives

The ‘What Do You Want’ question will illuminate some goal or outcome. A great many people that I am work with want to ‘Stop Worrying about xxx’ or ‘Dont want to feel zzz’. This to say the least is a very very reasonable outcome.

In the post H&T Four, you were invited to explore the question ‘What Do You Want’? using the NLP Well Formed Outcome process.

You were also invited to state your goals in a certain way. To state them in terms of not what you don’t want but in terms of what you want. So that is your goals stated in the so called ‘positive’.

Irrespective of how you stated your goals here is a neat process that explores and loosens the underlying beliefs relevant to the goal.  This is a process that will generate different perspectives about your outcome / goal.

For each goal, I invite you to answer  the following questions in the order thy are presented. Of course you will do them in the order you want. My experience is the order does have significance so choose wisely.

pick and write down three goals you want to explore. For each goal answer all of the following questions. Please take the time to really consider all of your answers before moving on to the next question.

  1. What will happen if I do achieve this goal?
  2. What will happen if I don’t achieve this goal?
  3. What won’t happen if I do achieve this goal?
  4. What won’t happen if I don’t achieve this goal?

These four ‘Cartesian questions’ especially Q4 tend to open up our own perspectives and encourage views of different yet related possibilities and outcomes.

For all of your goals, well at least the ones you want to work with go ahead and use this reasonably rapid process to generate new perspectives and explore the validity and possible consequences.Success

The next hint and tip will require you to have used these Cartesian questions and the Well Formed Outcome process on your goals. It will also require that you have refined your list of goals down to only the ones you are really committed to achieving.

I suggest picking just three that are most important to you as having too many goals and doing nothing about them is a potential recipe for procrastination.

The next hint and tip will be about creating and maintaining the right motivation to help you work towards getting what you really want.

10 Hints & Tips for surviving a temporary recession – HT Three

Don’t worry about this temporary recession. Don’t cancel Jesus Day. Don’t feel anxious. Don’t feel bad you need to take that extra job at the burger bar. In fact don’t drop down into despair and feel bad.

All well and good, sincerely meant to be offering positives. They suggest what not to do and are offered with good intentions.

BUT it doesn’t quite have that effect now, does it?

The effect it has is to FIRST concentrate or focus thoughts on what is in essence exactly what you do not want. Opps!

This is because language, in order to be understood, is processed, made sense of, by what is said first. And this is done so fast it is done outside of consciousness. It is like half a message NOT THIS but then what? Well that will be the SECOND intended effect and we will get on to that a little later.

As part of my job as an NLP Trainer and Therapist I regularly drive to a variety of places in the UK.  Doing so I am privy to the many wonderful Road Signs, strategically placed, with the intention of providing information or attempting to deliver a message. Some are particularly poingient in this current exploration. Here are some examples of them.

  • xxx Accidents in the last year. nnn Fatalities.
  • Don’t Speed
  • Don’t not park close to the cliff edge.

All these signs send a message. Some tell you what not to do, others provide information BUT this is only half of the intended message. It is in the form of a warning.

Let me digress slightly. Imagine you have Children ( if you don’t already ) and one of them sticks a pencil that their uncle gave them in an electricity socket. You shout ( quite reasonably )  ‘Don’t do that’. Or they move to touch a disconnected yet still very hot iron, again you shout ‘Don’t touch that!’ They hesitate and await ( if you are quick ) the next instruction you deliver, or not! OK I know the tone and energy of your voice will carry the warning ( it’s not just the words )

So there has, been at least two messages conveyed by you in this instance. The verbal part, the words and much more importantly, the inherent danger, conveyed in your voice tone.

The language and thoughts we use can massively influence and effect how we act in the world. There are a lot of NLP people who get overly excited and carried away about the nature of so called negative commands ( expressing what NOT to do ) and seems to forget that for the most part they do actually work very well.

This next part is particularly focused and tuned to you the reader. Take for example the very reasonable thoughts.

  • I don’t want to loose my job
  • I don’t want to feel anxious
  • I must not allow my boss to bully me
  • I will never feel confident enough to ask for a pay rise

All of these are very reasonable examples of actual situations. Check these thoroughly for yourself right now. Once you have done that lets address the SECOND part of the intended communication.

  • I don’t want to loose my job -> I want to continue to be employed
  • I don’t want to feel anxious -> I want to feel calm and in control
  • I must not allow my boss to bully me -> I want my boss to respect my opinions and treat me in a dignified way
  • I will never feel confident enough to ask for a pay rise -> I want to feel confident when I make my supporting case for a pay rise

So as you begin to notice the times you are telling yourself what you don’t want, in addition to that start to add the second half of the communication on to it. Tell yourself what you do want.

Think about it this way

WARNING ( move away ) FIRST -> REWARD ( move toward ) SECOND

A WARNING gives a powerful motivation to do something, perhaps from our fight / flight / sleep system. Now you can channel this energy to direct yourself to what you do want instead. The reward or outcome.

  • Don’t worry about this temporary recession, instead begin to feel calm and notice what you can do about this temporary situation.
  • Don’t cancel Jesus Day, celebrate Jesus Day.
  • Don’t feel anxious, feel a little more relaxed more of the time.
  • Don’t feel bad you need to take that extra job at the burger bar, instead understand you are taking control of your situation as best you can at the moment.
  • In fact don’t drop down into despair and feel bad, take courage, keep going and feel as good as you can.

Perchange to Dream

Last week at Kung Fu, after training one of the students remarked “I have a long way to go
I replied “look how for you have come in the past six months I see the progress you’ve made compared to others“, I smiled, he smiled back
but I don’t compare myself to others” he said.

Once upon a space the time is 1953. Everyone knows that it is quite literally, no matter what, it is impossible for a human being to run a mile in less than four minutes. That ‘well known fact’ was destined to change.

Roger Bannister a 25 year old medical student prepared for the race of a life time with two colleges, Chataway and Brasher. Both men were to act as pacemakers for Bannister in the race. They had helped Bannister prepare for the race in the weeks before in Paddington Green in London.

A mild English summer day with a blustery breeze was the setting on the 6th May 1954. This was the day when Roger Bannister would make new history. The race took place on the Iffley road track in Oxford. Running for the Amateur Athletic Association Bannister set off a a cracking pace behind his first pacemaker Brasher and when Brasher visibly tired Chataway tookover. In the last incredible, demanding and record breaking 200 yards Roger sprinted to the front and gave it his all in crossing the line.

On hearing that the 4 minute mile barrier had been broke the crowd erupted in celebration and cheers and made lots of noise too. Roger Bannister’s new record time was 3mins 59.4 and this was achieved in a 15mph crosswind.

And what is even more incredible is that following Bannisters record breaking feat others, buoyed by his success soon began to replicate and better his achievement. The very next month John Landy recorded 3mins 57.9

If one person can do it then others can do it too

Is one of the operating-beliefs of NLP. You could adopt this belief temporarily in contexts where you have evidence that other people have some skill, success, attitude that you have not yet accessed yet…
