Why Effort in Learning is Vital : From Know About to Know How

Anytime you go about your business of learning something new or enhancing current learnings there are some ways that can seriously, very seriously increase your practical understandings of your chosen subject. Learning doesn’t have to be dreary, boring or anxiety provoking. It can be fun, exhilarating and deeply meaningful when it’s done right!

Fear and Anxiety thoughts ( what if I get it wrong, I don’t understand, i don’t know what to do ) are the biggest inhibitors in learning when not utilised or reframed or better yet not there at all in the beginning. Beginners Mind.

Effort in Learning Newcastle NLP Practitioner

Learning is effortful and so it should be. You expend your time and energies to learn to apply your expertise and experience to make your own life better and perhaps with just a pinch of human connection, other peoples life better too.

There is a huge gulf between know about and know how

Deep learning is about becoming obsessed with your subject in the right way. Making time to practice, review and focus correctly on the inevitable errors and mistakes, correcting and as such nurturing your neurology and psychology to functional greatness.

One of my good friends was asking me about meditation. They said they can’t do it as their mind wanders. OK says I, do you want to learn? Yes said they. OK, let’s do this for 20 minutes ( I was offering an experience, which is easily facilitated ). Two chants in they were asking questions. We stopped there.

My old friend Steve often says the difference between the East and the West is in the West, generally people do to understand; which makes absolute sense to me. In the East people need to understand before they do. Like that old cartoon ( New Yorker ) of two doors, one leads to lectures about heaven, the other leads to heaven. There is a huge queue for the lecture.

Drinking in experiences is very different to the vicarious reading about them which is still many steps removed from denotations of facts. Read a book describing NLP mirroring and matching and you know about it. Do it, practice it and you have your own tacit, emotional and descriptive experiential data base which is all know about and up for review, revision and refinement.

I want to point out that there really is a grey area that consists of mental strategies and decision making where there is highly cognitive processes involved withing a skill. For instance strategies in chess, tennis and quantum physics and the modelling or drinking in of such skills can be very important.

Conversely, while hovering in the liminal grey space; what came first? The strategy or lots of experiential scatter which was then labelled and processed into a tacit flow diagram of how to proceed in situation ‘x’.

A Brief Summary and Suggestion to Really Learn

The poet Schiller in responding to an aspiring young poets question about style, meaning and creating wonders answered something like. You are bringing the cognitive hammer down to soon. Let your creative style pour out, let it flow, don’t think and then much later do the revisions. This is about letting the aesthetic, emotional creative side run wild first.

Another short idea comes from one of the Zen stories. This is about a monk, an artist who used to get very drunk. Dip his long hair into some ink and whip his hair over some paper, creating random, spontaneous patters. In the morning after a costa coffee and sober, he used to look closely at the patterns and take a tiny brush, add a little detail to refine his work.

Now both of these stories illustrate a very definite requirement for practice of the forms and techniques so they are known and doable without much thought, which requires thought and practice. To a place where fully internalised skills can flow and then where appropriate revisions can occur. A fusion of inductive and deductive learning to application.

Carl Jung describes his Intuition function as one where a person can see the possibilities in a given situation and having heard the stories concerning the evolution of NLP it was opportunity met tacit knowledge. This was then, imo, formulated into a process of modelling.

NLP Modelling is one of the corner stones or foundations of NLP Master Practitioner training in Newcastle. Incidentally taking place in Newcastle March to June 2020.

John Grinders NLP Modelling Model, for deep learning is very simple and effective when the right energy and effort is focused to acquire and refine new skills. This is the first three parts of a five step process.

  1. Find a genius in the field you want to learn.
  2. Copy to the best of your abilities* said genius.
  3. Apply what you can do in a similar context and verify you are getting the same kind of results.

* This is done in a ‘know nothing’ state which is equivalent to beginner mind. It is so simple. Just copy. No thoughts, no analysis except refining the copying or monkey see monkey do act.

In applying your newly acquiring and acquired skills, it is important to just do what you have absorbed, with little or no though until after the encounter where you can and should review, revise and refine what you are doing relative to your exemplar or genius source.

Newcastle NLP Practitioner training January to June 2020 for a fun, experiential and life enhancing training that will offer the deep learning and practice that supports the essential difference between know about and know how.

Master Practitioner in NLP Newcastle

When I participated in my first NLP practitioner I really didn’t know what to expect or what I was letting myself in for. Yes I had really enjoyed a couple of NLP introduction courses but I really didn’t know. The frame of not knowing or even anticipating, still to me is one of incredible freshness in opportunities.

Completing that first NLP practitioner left me with so many questions and so much curiosity that my only question was when can I do the Master Practitioner?

NLP Master Practitioner Newcastle

During that first practitioner, what I learned through experience in the course as well as an obsessional amount of extra curricular reading and practice with my fellow travellers was life changing. I reflect back on this time now with sincere gratitude because for me there were so very many doors opened to realising, at that time my limited perspectives and how I can choose to explore.

One of my favourite teachers in Buddhism is Robert Thurman. Something I heard him say recently goes something like this ”even if you know the teaching, you should listen like you are learning something new, for the first time” and this is so relevant to actual learning. If we think we know it, there is the potential to gloss over and miss some new and deep insight.

There is a interstellar gulf between intellectual knowing and the kind of real knowledge that comes from experience and even then is only relevant in any one moment. This is the essence of wisdom. One is something we can talk about, for instance meditation and something we can communicate that makes a real difference, like someone who has engaged and discovered what meditation can actually bring forth.

So back to NLP Master Practitioner training

What I loved was the opportunity to really and more deeply understand the fundamentals of nlp interventions as well as one form of modelling. In this instance, analytical modelling which is a very useful skill. This involves questioning the exemplar and exploring their beliefs and values to ‘create’ a thought process which one can attempt to turn into a set of steps.

There are other ways of modelling which imo are far better suited to acquiring an embodied skill set such as deep trance identification or what is called unconscious physicalised uptake. These methods bypass verbal descriptions. In actuality all of these methods can complement each other.

By far the most important experiences I had were gaining deeper and more influential methods to expand my own world views as well as being able to engage with others, understanding deep motivations with behavioural and thinking structures. This was formative in my decision to become a therapist and change facilitator. It also lead to a big career change, but that is another story.

Newcastle NLP Practitioner Training August 2015

Just under 14  years ago in 2001 years ago I attended an NLP Introduction training, over the next three years I was so attracted to the results of this personal exploration of how I could change my thoughts, behaviours and shape more of the kind of future I wanted, NLP turned into my professional career.

From very early on in my explorations of NLP, I discovered that using the NLP process helped me realise my deeper personal freedom. I mean freedom to radically alter my thoughts and responses to different situations. Which means having massive influence on what I feel and what I choose to do.

NLP Practitioner Training

Course Graduates April 2014

The application of NLP, fuelled and ultimately changed many aspects of how I live and how I act in, and perceive life. The process orientated and experiential ways of being, from an NLP Practitioner training and onwards, gradually filtered through my old conditioning.

You can read about how using NLP I went form a job I hated to a purposeful career.

As old conditionings dropped away my life opened up to new dimensions of living and ways of experiencing life in positively new and different ways; and  in ways I doubt I would have not experienced without my NLP journey.

Personal freedom is available to everyone yet most people like myself need to be shown the tools to make it happen. The tools to learn to change habitual negative thinking patterns into more useful ones. The tools to change aspects of old beliefs into empowering ones.

Yet NLP will not change you at all. Your personal development requires your active participation. Your use of and reflection with NLP patterns and process will give you the tools and techniques to change yourself. As it were to update your operating systems with practice, over time.

NLP can have a particularly powerful effect on how we communicate. Generally NLP Practitioners become more congruent and understanding of others as well as themselves. This tends to increase our effectiveness in the world.

Who This NLP Practitioner Course Will Benefit – People Desiring to :

  • Develop more effective communication skills
  • Strengthen emotional resilience
  • Enhance employment prospects
  • Learn Coaching and Therapeutic Practices
  • Become more effective students of life

The NLP training is experiential in nature so there are no exams, tests or death by powerpoint. Exercises and developmental integration of skills is at the heart of learning and utilising NLP to grow and develop and in ways update and enhance who you are and what you do. I feel this is a key to personal freedom.

Before I took my NLP Master Practitioner training I didn’t know I was looking for direction in my life. Not only did I find direction, I had the liberating feeling of knowing where I was going and even how.

In 2004 I was working in a job where the love and enthusiasm I once had had worn off to be replaced by a dislike but it paid well enough to still be sticking it out. That job was a means to provide me with all the kinds of things many people value as the necessary aspects or rewards of a good life. You know money, house, car, hobbies, holidays great social life – all that stuff. It was very much the work to live philosophy for me then.

My main interest then was NLP and having completed an NLP Practitioner I was really interested in taking this further. And like I have wrote, I was engaged in working to live yet the Master Practitioner training I was soon to begin would provide crucial experiences which would pose for me a very deep question. What does it really mean to live?

NLP Master Practitioner February 2014

So way back then, I was working 5 days a week and the very occasional weekend, stressed at work and looking forward to 4.30pm and heading home. Work seemed to take up way too much of my time and energy and I was living mostly for the weekend and evenings. Those times when I would be free from the millstone of a job I was dragging along behind me through the day and by evening, be doing what I loved to do. Of course, paid for by that old milestone!

My weekday lunchtimes however were great, not because I love food, I do, but my lunchtimes were spent engaging in my love of learning and practising NLP mostly in the Newcastle city centre library. It’s called being a anorak I know. I knew the only way to get really good with anything is ongoing practice.

My previous NLP Practitioner training had given me some of the most powerful and useful learning I had ever had in my entire adult life at that point. I had experienced deep personal changes in how I could run my own brain from the inside out, learned profound ways in which to use language and made some exceptional new friends along the way too. Three cheers for NLP. Hip Hip …

Practically everyone I was involved with my early NLP circles had evolved in perceivable ways and some for sure more than others. I was happier and certainly more connected to the most important people I cared for. And already due to lots and lots of practice was feeling empowered for the most part in my life. Deciding to continue my NLP adventure and life changing learning’s I chose to attend the NLP Master Practitioner training.

The Master Practitioner is where I had a deep realisation that I really had no direction in my life. And for me a priceless realisation at just the right time!

In addition to the ‘Practising Mastery & Mastering Practice’ the deepening and expanding of the principles of NLP, understanding more about the structure of various processes, having a great time and feeling my skills, perceptions and abilities escalate; One additional aspect to my learning was modelling.

The modelling process on offer at the Master Practitioner was pretty much pure analytical modelling which to me now seems a partial representation of what modelling may be; non the less it was yet another additional way I learned to acquire certain types of skill sets more quickly. Modelling is how the original NLP processes are said to have been acquired.

Modelling hat and anorak on, I went off and over a period of some months ‘modelled’ for around 25-30 hours a really good friend who was one of the most gripping story tellers I knew. I asked all the analytical questions, the whys and what, the thought processes and what was going on inside his head but this was really not getting me a skill I could use, you see some ‘skills’ are more friendly to analytical modelling some aren’t. One person on the course ‘modelled’ how to put flat pack furniture together and in this instance the analytical approach worked very well.

My relentlessly patient questioning did put our friendship on the line more than once. What I ended up doing was mixing up the analytical stuff and simply copying what he did. This simply made intuitive sense to me to physically and verbally play out what my friend did. It still spooked him but less than the questioning.

It was here that I had a proper light bulb moment, where I really was learning the value of copying behaviour in this type of modelling endeavour. Later the next year I would discover this copying was the essential modelling taught by Grinder, one of the co-creators.

But even with all of this new skills and information at my finger tips I was also discovering things I really, really hadn’t anticipated I would get from the training and this made for magic extras in transforming my life!

An exceptional tutor on that training and someone still today I am in contact with is Ian Berry. Ian pointed me in two additional directions. One was to explore the work of Joseph Campbell and another was to explore the work of George Lakoff and Mark Johnson.

Lakoff and Johnson was the beginning of an ongoing journey into the metaphorical nature of language and an embodied self in our environment. Exploring the often hidden aspects of our words and seemingly throw away comments that we all use from time to time.

This was really enabling in giving me even more ways to gain insights and more fully understand the communications of others and of course my own. Feeling this kind of sharpening in one’s own perceptions is truly liberating because it is a waking up of consciousness and you gain a little more awareness.

Outside of the course, reading around and watching anything I could on NLP I was beginning to develop an interest in neurology. There are some very sound neurological ‘reasons’ why many NLP Processes work so well in the way they do. It certainly seems to me now here in 2014 that neurology has caught up with NLP in terms of explaining physiological and psychological interventions. My interest in neurology is a really important part in my 1:1 work. I had gotten lots of ways to frame NLP processes and deepen my understandings further.

Joseph Campbell’s work for me was perhaps, perhaps … the spark that ignited all the training and development I was currently involved in. Campbell was the worlds best know comparative mythologist in his life time. His books and videos of lectures he had given simply spoke in a language that touched my soul or if you prefer touched an innate human curiosity into our history as a people that we all share at some levels.

Mythology incorporates religion, spirituality and the many common themes from the various cultures, societies and civilisations from our planet that we all share. This lead me to a life long interest in mythology and how it has shaped our consciousness and culture, societies and its effects with our life now and into our futures.

This is what it is to be on your own path in your own life. Campbell called this ‘following your bliss’ as in walking your unique individual path in this life time.

This is for me knowing where I am going. When you walk your own path it is truly your own. No one on this earth has don’t it before and no one after you will ever be able to do this. Your path is as unique as your genetics, your fingerprints and the environment you grow in and experience now with your own nervous system.

And Campbell says there are two paths. The left hand path and the right hand path. The right hand path is the conventional path we are expected to take by society. Get a job, get a house, have a family, pay into a pension, retire and hopefully have saved enough for a good care home to expire peacefully with a nice epitaph like “J. Doe – Model Citizen Second Class – Lived a perfectly respectable & conventional life.”

The left hand path is much more about your adventure and discovering what it is you want to have your lifetime in doing. It may be unconventional, not necessarily respected by all but it will be adventure, blissful and unique.
So of course I always had great choice in continuing in my job but I never really realised it in that way before. Never realised how much I was resisting the pull to do something that for me would be a true path.

The NLP Master Practitioner had in many great ways been a catalyst for me in realising a meaningful direction for my life. What was left was for me to act!

From feeling very much OK, apart from a job, in life in general that feeling of OK had bloomed into a strong feeling of purpose and direction as to the ways I knew I could live my life. I walked from the Master Practitioner feeling sharper and more awake. Certainly having practised mastery and mastered practice in many skills yet more importantly for me, something deeper had woke up and that would soon bring a wealth of new experiences along with a new career onto my horizons.

Thank you for reading this far. I am hoping you are either considering taking an NLP Master Practitioner training here in Newcastle or maybe you have already decided you are.

How I went from a job I hated, where I felt totally unappreciated and unfulfilled to discovering a purposeful way I do what I love to do and make a really good living helping people enrich their life.

In 1999 I got my dream job as a software programmer. I was self taught during a carer break where I discovered my previous dream degree related job was not all I imagined it to be. I was working offshore and making the connections between being in prison and living on an oil rig. Yes for sure it was very well paid but and it is a big but I was really not happy.

When I spoke to my family and closest friends about my emotional state, how I was hating working offshore they all pointed out their opinion on the money front. With what I was earning I could ‘retire’ in five years and buy lots of property and there was genuine job security. This was all true but I felt soulless and I was not feeling right with my lot.

All but one, they all told me to stick it out. One suggested I come home and start a restaurant with them. I took the cowards way out, the only way I could and quit my offshore job. But not to start a restaurant, that one luckily, in hind site, fell through.

I did have enough squirrelled away to take a year out and teach myself programming. See, I wanted to be a computer game programmer. I loved the idea of getting paid well to do something I loved to do and I was in love with computer games. So how to make that happen? For nearly a year every day I used my savings to live and study from text books the arts and science of programming. Now this is what I will call a total geek, me! That kind of geekeyness has never left and it is such as asset!

Well I did get a job in programming. It wasn’t game programming but it was programing and within a few years I had risen towards the top of a well principled Newcastle based software company that was in the business of medical imaging and oil and gas imaging. I loved that job and I really did – It wasn’t a job, it was a calling. Well kind of. That was until it went totally corporate and was bought out, as many highly successful oil related ventures do. But what was really the issue, yet again, was my emotional state. This time though it was going to be different. Why was this different this time you might ask?

In 2002 I had begun a journey into the world of Neurolinguistic Programming or NLP. At first just a couple of introductory courses which really sparked my interest in how I could alter and manage my own emotional state and that really equated to taking much more charge of my life and coming out of a poor me or as some call it a victim mentality.

I had done training with a well know local NLP Practitioner training provider in Newcastle and since completing the NLP Practitioner level course I was very different in how and what I could do to better manage my thoughts, my emotions and how I behaved in the world. I was still unsatisfied with my job as a programmer and I realised I was the source and solution of my problems.

To say the NLP bug bit me and bit deep was ( and still is ) an understatement. I was reading, writing and watching everything I could about NLP. I was practising NLP for hours each and every day and this continued over the next year or so. My family and friends thought I had joined a cult because on one New Years day I was driving to Northallerton to attend an NLP Practice group when my friends were going to the pub to make an out out day of it.

What I was doing was everything I could to positively affect my situation and this is clear to see because in 2005 I completed my first NLP Trainer Trainer before I had completed my NLP Master Practitioner while I completed my first Hypnotherapy training. When I say NLP became my life I am quite sure about that. I was the first person I know of to complete a  NLP Trainer Trainer before the NLP Master Practitioner.

What I love about NLP ( and there are other ways too ) is that with practice just about anyone can live a more happy and more fulfilled life. It teaches how to run your own brain and how to use language in ways that are extremely liberating. I was so sure about this and the positive effects with me that I wanted to share NLP with whoever wanted to live a more fulfilling and happier life. The equation is simple to me. If more people are happy, kinder and more understanding of others then the world is a much better place.

In 2005 I resigned and presently left the Newcastle Technopole building by Manors Metro for the last time. I remember walking away, not looking back, looking forward, thinking I will never set foot in that building or work for that company again. The sense of freedom and conviction comes back now as I right this and it feels very very good.

That was a very beautiful and powerful experience for me because I had decided to start my own NLP Training business and go full time working with clients using hypnotherapy. It was also a little scary too because to fund this venture I had chosen to sell my house as well as resign. I was walking my own path and this for those who know is liberating and freeing – it is also completely fresh and new because no one in this way has done this before. As individual as your own finger prints.

Making my NLP Training and Hypnotherapy Training business fully functional and successful has not been some walk in the park. It has been at times extremely hard and effortful work yet always rewarding. In the early years there were a couple of times where I literally had no money and had to borrow from friends and family to eat.

What is absolutely wonderful now and I occasionally need to pinch myself is that I have created an amazing lifestyle for myself where I get to help all manner of people to empower and take more charge of their life. Take more charge of their emotions and more fully do more of what they want or don’t want to do. This is my calling or purpose in life and I get paid and make a good living doing this valuable work.

If you are reading this far then it is fair to assume that you have some interest in NLP. And you should know there are no guarantees that doing an NLP Practitioner training will give you the freedom and lifestyle you want.

Those kind of massive personal transformations require hard work, practise and time. What you will get through an NLP training are the processes that can and most likely will help you make the right kind of changes that support your personal evolution and help you to have a much more enjoyable life connecting more deeply with the right people and nurturing positive relationships.

What You Need To Know About The Kinds Of NLP Trainings Available

When there are no other alternatives this can be the only solution. I think about NLP Practitioner ‘online certification’ as the last resort. The whole and necessary human interaction is missing and it is essential in developing the required feedback loop you only get with real people on a live training.

Did you know that around 80% of self help book and that includes the copious NLP self help books are bough and never read? Of those who do a little reading many don’t do the all important exercises as you will discover NLP application is not a theoretical subject.

And for sure even with live trainings you really won’t be able to master all of your emotions and you certainly won’t be able to cure anyones phobia in minutes. That is the proverbal rubbish that you shouldn’t believe because its right up there with the ‘Earn a 7 figure sum coaching’ or ‘Write a best seller in a week’ nonsense that gets bandied around.

Books can help as a companion to actual live training. Assuming you know how to drive or swim how do you feel about a ‘learn to swim book’ ?

NLP Training Courses : Is This For You?

All NLP training courses are not about personal therapy. There are always aspects of personal change and transformation, this is explicit in NLP. An NLP training is not a substitute for therapy. To participate in these trainings and pass the certification requirements you are required to fully participate within your group – this is not a classroom lecture! This is powerful experiential training!!

You can easily ensure these trainings are for you by either calling Nigel to discuss your training requirements ( 0770 481 8467 ) or look at Communicating Excellences YouTube Channel to get a sense of how these training work.
