Dealing with Guilt : A Gestalt Approach

I can understand how the NLP Meta Model was coined from reading Fritz Pearls Gestalt Therapy Verbatim and how Uncle Fritz way of coaxing people to be in the present and his insistence in process and the Here and Now is a priority in Gestalt. This has roots in Zen, Spirituality and where possible the abandonment of Maya or the thought induced coma-vale which separates people from direct experience.

This is a post sharing Fritz’ method in dealing with Guilt and resolving it and completing a Gestalt. I am sure this really won’t work for everyone as you yourself have to define, or at least work out what Guilt means to you. Guilt is just a word which can have many meanings. Though I am quite sure that certain emotional affects including Guilt can be very satisfactorily dealt with using this method.

In reference to what Guilt is for you, I want to draw your attention to those almost lovable pictures people put on social media of their dogs who have without their owners presence eat the sofa or a bag of Winalott. They acted out of their nature and only afterwards felt the dogma or ideology of an owner. Bad dog.

This is what many, who I can regard as enlightened and specifically Nietzsche and Krishnamurti, will say there is not good or evil, there is just choicelessness when you act from and out of your spontaneity. With that said, lets deal with Guilt resolution by way of Gestalt and Fritz.

I want to preface this process for resolving Guilt by way of a short usage of the Hindu five cosha’s ( sheathes ) that construct reality. This is all to do with duality, complementary and the integration and acceptance of opposites.

Joseph Campbell discusses the cosha’s as follows:

  1. Food sheath, basically the organic body.
  2. Breath sheath, life force and cooks the food we eat.
  3. Mind sheath, all the mental stuff, good and bad.
  4. Wisdom body, very deep intelligence, cells etc.
  5. Bliss body. Atman.

There is a big, large, disconnect between the mental sheath of judging and making a specific meaning and the wisdom body, that aspect that brought you into being. The wisdom body holds all opposites, all at once but the mental sheath deals with pairs of opposites, good-bad, right-wrong and friend or foe, that kind of stuff.

Now, getting back to Gestalt and working through Guilt. Pearls says that Guilt in terms of Gestalt is actually about Resentment.  Again, remember for me this does not have to be about Guilt, this can be abut anger, hostility, loss and … well put in your own, you defined emotion. Rules, yours and others and the seeming transgressions.

Gestalt Guilt Resolution

OK, So according to Fritz, Guilt is about resentment. Find your guilt and find out who you are resenting and for what.

In this exploration ( stay with it ) and resentment is about your demands or you could say rules that are imposed. Find the demands that you were tacitly, and now consciously making.

Once you have these, there may be many, the idea now is to state them in the imperative and that means the command! In Gestalt this is taking to the empty chair, where you imagine that other half of an argument is there, right in from of you in the here and now.

This will be something like, “Stop, Do it, Talk to me, Put it there” – Imperative / Command.

Now this next step is what really does it for me in a good way. The sublimation or integration of the pairs of opposites.  Return to the resentments and Appreciate those very same bits and bod. Yes, appreciate them fully and completely. And go even more forward and tell that imagined person ( you ) what else you appreciate about them.

This may or may not be covered in the March 2019 NLP Master Practitioner training in Newcastle. There are linguistic refinements to be added and the language really has nothing to much to interfere with this awesome process of completing a gestalt so you can let go of the past and move more fully into the present.

  1. Acknowledge Guilt and Define it.
  2. Turn guilt into resentments.
  3. State your rules and demands.
  4. Express your demands as commands!
  5. Switch to Appreciation.
  6. Acknowledge more appreciations.

This, as a process, helps to move you more towards the wisdom body as mentioned in the five sheaths earlier. Moving away from the duality of thinking and towards a deeper wisdom that is your birth-right.  Perhaps even towards bliss. But one step at a time. Or not!

Master Practitioner NLP … Deepening Language Patterning …

While in another life I wrote software for the analysis on images, medical and oil exploitation related I was also completely enthusiastic in the world of NLP. My lunch time consisted of an hour, every five days, to go somewhere, usually Newcastle library and study language patterns.

I was already in the process of mastering language patterns. I had no end goal, no purpose other than the joy of learning and utilisation. I was lucky enough to have been both introduced and directed to study, for fun, NLP’s meta model and Lakoffs & Johnsons Metaphors We Live by at around the same time 2003/4.

Master Practitioner NLP - Language Patterns - Newcastle upon Tyne

I did not make the connections at that time between things I already knew tacitly in terms of martial arts and computer programming. The balance of practice of set pieces and spontaneity to create in the moment. I can not stress enough from my perspective that it is a necessary condition to both practice ‘form’ and to go into flow states to create; and move to mastery.

One of the patterns Rossi & Erickson have mentioned is what is called Implied Directive. Now the name will not necessarily be familiar, yet,  when you realise the pattern and probably have some form of physical response to you’re understanding the pattern.

The Implied Directive is a part of a bigger pattern called Ideo-Dynamic ( which has four parts according to Erickson & Rossi ) something like this, as a formula or structured approach.

Time Directive -> Implication/Presuppostion -> Physical Response ( what does this mean? )

WHEN -> You REALISE SOMETHING of personal IMPORTANCE-> YOU WILL SMILE to yourself. This is something like …

AS SOON as YOU REALISE YOU CAN learn something of importance YOUR EYES WILL BLINK 3 times.

What this is attempting to do is create an honest ( and this is very important ) physical confirmation of a psychological change/realisation.

In trance, the motoric or physical response is ideally one that is honestly unconscious. It is easy to presuppose some movement that we know will happen for sure in the future, such as eye blinking or even touching the head.

To make these formulaic and very good patterns meaningful there are elements to add which can be confirmed in the trance state by way of honest unconscious movements. And … we can mix the elements of the implied directive around to affect the same kind of psycho-somatic presuppositions.

Psycho-Somatic meanings are the emotional and valuable textures of our life.

Smiling unexpectedly ( A PHYSICAL RESPONSE and depotentiating a conscious response AND by implication ) BEFORE you know you are ( TIME BINDING ) can MEAN there is more about you than you consciously know ( IMPLICATION ) is one way to re-structure an implied directive. This is :

I am sure you can restructure this is any permutation of three different elements to affect similar results.

There is and there are huge benefits in practising and re-implementing all language patterns as much as actually knowing what the language patterns themselves are intended to accomplish and what they can do too!

Language patterns are one aspect of mastering NLP or practising mastery of nlp.

When you realise language patterns are aspects of much greater whole of communicating the ideas of positive change you might find yourself practising them more, even without any outcome in mind … and congruently utilising such patterns when you work with clients, friends or writing blog posts, you might type something that other can use and feel good doing this … maybe …

NLP Master Practitioner Training in Newcastle this coming September.

Master Practitioner in NLP Newcastle

When I participated in my first NLP practitioner I really didn’t know what to expect or what I was letting myself in for. Yes I had really enjoyed a couple of NLP introduction courses but I really didn’t know. The frame of not knowing or even anticipating, still to me is one of incredible freshness in opportunities.

Completing that first NLP practitioner left me with so many questions and so much curiosity that my only question was when can I do the Master Practitioner?

NLP Master Practitioner Newcastle

During that first practitioner, what I learned through experience in the course as well as an obsessional amount of extra curricular reading and practice with my fellow travellers was life changing. I reflect back on this time now with sincere gratitude because for me there were so very many doors opened to realising, at that time my limited perspectives and how I can choose to explore.

One of my favourite teachers in Buddhism is Robert Thurman. Something I heard him say recently goes something like this ”even if you know the teaching, you should listen like you are learning something new, for the first time” and this is so relevant to actual learning. If we think we know it, there is the potential to gloss over and miss some new and deep insight.

There is a interstellar gulf between intellectual knowing and the kind of real knowledge that comes from experience and even then is only relevant in any one moment. This is the essence of wisdom. One is something we can talk about, for instance meditation and something we can communicate that makes a real difference, like someone who has engaged and discovered what meditation can actually bring forth.

So back to NLP Master Practitioner training

What I loved was the opportunity to really and more deeply understand the fundamentals of nlp interventions as well as one form of modelling. In this instance, analytical modelling which is a very useful skill. This involves questioning the exemplar and exploring their beliefs and values to ‘create’ a thought process which one can attempt to turn into a set of steps.

There are other ways of modelling which imo are far better suited to acquiring an embodied skill set such as deep trance identification or what is called unconscious physicalised uptake. These methods bypass verbal descriptions. In actuality all of these methods can complement each other.

By far the most important experiences I had were gaining deeper and more influential methods to expand my own world views as well as being able to engage with others, understanding deep motivations with behavioural and thinking structures. This was formative in my decision to become a therapist and change facilitator. It also lead to a big career change, but that is another story.

Before I took my NLP Master Practitioner training I didn’t know I was looking for direction in my life. Not only did I find direction, I had the liberating feeling of knowing where I was going and even how.

In 2004 I was working in a job where the love and enthusiasm I once had had worn off to be replaced by a dislike but it paid well enough to still be sticking it out. That job was a means to provide me with all the kinds of things many people value as the necessary aspects or rewards of a good life. You know money, house, car, hobbies, holidays great social life – all that stuff. It was very much the work to live philosophy for me then.

My main interest then was NLP and having completed an NLP Practitioner I was really interested in taking this further. And like I have wrote, I was engaged in working to live yet the Master Practitioner training I was soon to begin would provide crucial experiences which would pose for me a very deep question. What does it really mean to live?

NLP Master Practitioner February 2014

So way back then, I was working 5 days a week and the very occasional weekend, stressed at work and looking forward to 4.30pm and heading home. Work seemed to take up way too much of my time and energy and I was living mostly for the weekend and evenings. Those times when I would be free from the millstone of a job I was dragging along behind me through the day and by evening, be doing what I loved to do. Of course, paid for by that old milestone!

My weekday lunchtimes however were great, not because I love food, I do, but my lunchtimes were spent engaging in my love of learning and practising NLP mostly in the Newcastle city centre library. It’s called being a anorak I know. I knew the only way to get really good with anything is ongoing practice.

My previous NLP Practitioner training had given me some of the most powerful and useful learning I had ever had in my entire adult life at that point. I had experienced deep personal changes in how I could run my own brain from the inside out, learned profound ways in which to use language and made some exceptional new friends along the way too. Three cheers for NLP. Hip Hip …

Practically everyone I was involved with my early NLP circles had evolved in perceivable ways and some for sure more than others. I was happier and certainly more connected to the most important people I cared for. And already due to lots and lots of practice was feeling empowered for the most part in my life. Deciding to continue my NLP adventure and life changing learning’s I chose to attend the NLP Master Practitioner training.

The Master Practitioner is where I had a deep realisation that I really had no direction in my life. And for me a priceless realisation at just the right time!

In addition to the ‘Practising Mastery & Mastering Practice’ the deepening and expanding of the principles of NLP, understanding more about the structure of various processes, having a great time and feeling my skills, perceptions and abilities escalate; One additional aspect to my learning was modelling.

The modelling process on offer at the Master Practitioner was pretty much pure analytical modelling which to me now seems a partial representation of what modelling may be; non the less it was yet another additional way I learned to acquire certain types of skill sets more quickly. Modelling is how the original NLP processes are said to have been acquired.

Modelling hat and anorak on, I went off and over a period of some months ‘modelled’ for around 25-30 hours a really good friend who was one of the most gripping story tellers I knew. I asked all the analytical questions, the whys and what, the thought processes and what was going on inside his head but this was really not getting me a skill I could use, you see some ‘skills’ are more friendly to analytical modelling some aren’t. One person on the course ‘modelled’ how to put flat pack furniture together and in this instance the analytical approach worked very well.

My relentlessly patient questioning did put our friendship on the line more than once. What I ended up doing was mixing up the analytical stuff and simply copying what he did. This simply made intuitive sense to me to physically and verbally play out what my friend did. It still spooked him but less than the questioning.

It was here that I had a proper light bulb moment, where I really was learning the value of copying behaviour in this type of modelling endeavour. Later the next year I would discover this copying was the essential modelling taught by Grinder, one of the co-creators.

But even with all of this new skills and information at my finger tips I was also discovering things I really, really hadn’t anticipated I would get from the training and this made for magic extras in transforming my life!

An exceptional tutor on that training and someone still today I am in contact with is Ian Berry. Ian pointed me in two additional directions. One was to explore the work of Joseph Campbell and another was to explore the work of George Lakoff and Mark Johnson.

Lakoff and Johnson was the beginning of an ongoing journey into the metaphorical nature of language and an embodied self in our environment. Exploring the often hidden aspects of our words and seemingly throw away comments that we all use from time to time.

This was really enabling in giving me even more ways to gain insights and more fully understand the communications of others and of course my own. Feeling this kind of sharpening in one’s own perceptions is truly liberating because it is a waking up of consciousness and you gain a little more awareness.

Outside of the course, reading around and watching anything I could on NLP I was beginning to develop an interest in neurology. There are some very sound neurological ‘reasons’ why many NLP Processes work so well in the way they do. It certainly seems to me now here in 2014 that neurology has caught up with NLP in terms of explaining physiological and psychological interventions. My interest in neurology is a really important part in my 1:1 work. I had gotten lots of ways to frame NLP processes and deepen my understandings further.

Joseph Campbell’s work for me was perhaps, perhaps … the spark that ignited all the training and development I was currently involved in. Campbell was the worlds best know comparative mythologist in his life time. His books and videos of lectures he had given simply spoke in a language that touched my soul or if you prefer touched an innate human curiosity into our history as a people that we all share at some levels.

Mythology incorporates religion, spirituality and the many common themes from the various cultures, societies and civilisations from our planet that we all share. This lead me to a life long interest in mythology and how it has shaped our consciousness and culture, societies and its effects with our life now and into our futures.

This is what it is to be on your own path in your own life. Campbell called this ‘following your bliss’ as in walking your unique individual path in this life time.

This is for me knowing where I am going. When you walk your own path it is truly your own. No one on this earth has don’t it before and no one after you will ever be able to do this. Your path is as unique as your genetics, your fingerprints and the environment you grow in and experience now with your own nervous system.

And Campbell says there are two paths. The left hand path and the right hand path. The right hand path is the conventional path we are expected to take by society. Get a job, get a house, have a family, pay into a pension, retire and hopefully have saved enough for a good care home to expire peacefully with a nice epitaph like “J. Doe – Model Citizen Second Class – Lived a perfectly respectable & conventional life.”

The left hand path is much more about your adventure and discovering what it is you want to have your lifetime in doing. It may be unconventional, not necessarily respected by all but it will be adventure, blissful and unique.
So of course I always had great choice in continuing in my job but I never really realised it in that way before. Never realised how much I was resisting the pull to do something that for me would be a true path.

The NLP Master Practitioner had in many great ways been a catalyst for me in realising a meaningful direction for my life. What was left was for me to act!

From feeling very much OK, apart from a job, in life in general that feeling of OK had bloomed into a strong feeling of purpose and direction as to the ways I knew I could live my life. I walked from the Master Practitioner feeling sharper and more awake. Certainly having practised mastery and mastered practice in many skills yet more importantly for me, something deeper had woke up and that would soon bring a wealth of new experiences along with a new career onto my horizons.

How I went from a job I hated, where I felt totally unappreciated and unfulfilled to discovering a purposeful way I do what I love to do and make a really good living helping people enrich their life.

In 1999 I got my dream job as a software programmer. I was self taught during a carer break where I discovered my previous dream degree related job was not all I imagined it to be. I was working offshore and making the connections between being in prison and living on an oil rig. Yes for sure it was very well paid but and it is a big but I was really not happy.

When I spoke to my family and closest friends about my emotional state, how I was hating working offshore they all pointed out their opinion on the money front. With what I was earning I could ‘retire’ in five years and buy lots of property and there was genuine job security. This was all true but I felt soulless and I was not feeling right with my lot.

All but one, they all told me to stick it out. One suggested I come home and start a restaurant with them. I took the cowards way out, the only way I could and quit my offshore job. But not to start a restaurant, that one luckily, in hind site, fell through.

I did have enough squirrelled away to take a year out and teach myself programming. See, I wanted to be a computer game programmer. I loved the idea of getting paid well to do something I loved to do and I was in love with computer games. So how to make that happen? For nearly a year every day I used my savings to live and study from text books the arts and science of programming. Now this is what I will call a total geek, me! That kind of geekeyness has never left and it is such as asset!

Well I did get a job in programming. It wasn’t game programming but it was programing and within a few years I had risen towards the top of a well principled Newcastle based software company that was in the business of medical imaging and oil and gas imaging. I loved that job and I really did – It wasn’t a job, it was a calling. Well kind of. That was until it went totally corporate and was bought out, as many highly successful oil related ventures do. But what was really the issue, yet again, was my emotional state. This time though it was going to be different. Why was this different this time you might ask?

In 2002 I had begun a journey into the world of Neurolinguistic Programming or NLP. At first just a couple of introductory courses which really sparked my interest in how I could alter and manage my own emotional state and that really equated to taking much more charge of my life and coming out of a poor me or as some call it a victim mentality.

I had done training with a well know local NLP Practitioner training provider in Newcastle and since completing the NLP Practitioner level course I was very different in how and what I could do to better manage my thoughts, my emotions and how I behaved in the world. I was still unsatisfied with my job as a programmer and I realised I was the source and solution of my problems.

To say the NLP bug bit me and bit deep was ( and still is ) an understatement. I was reading, writing and watching everything I could about NLP. I was practising NLP for hours each and every day and this continued over the next year or so. My family and friends thought I had joined a cult because on one New Years day I was driving to Northallerton to attend an NLP Practice group when my friends were going to the pub to make an out out day of it.

What I was doing was everything I could to positively affect my situation and this is clear to see because in 2005 I completed my first NLP Trainer Trainer before I had completed my NLP Master Practitioner while I completed my first Hypnotherapy training. When I say NLP became my life I am quite sure about that. I was the first person I know of to complete a  NLP Trainer Trainer before the NLP Master Practitioner.

What I love about NLP ( and there are other ways too ) is that with practice just about anyone can live a more happy and more fulfilled life. It teaches how to run your own brain and how to use language in ways that are extremely liberating. I was so sure about this and the positive effects with me that I wanted to share NLP with whoever wanted to live a more fulfilling and happier life. The equation is simple to me. If more people are happy, kinder and more understanding of others then the world is a much better place.

In 2005 I resigned and presently left the Newcastle Technopole building by Manors Metro for the last time. I remember walking away, not looking back, looking forward, thinking I will never set foot in that building or work for that company again. The sense of freedom and conviction comes back now as I right this and it feels very very good.

That was a very beautiful and powerful experience for me because I had decided to start my own NLP Training business and go full time working with clients using hypnotherapy. It was also a little scary too because to fund this venture I had chosen to sell my house as well as resign. I was walking my own path and this for those who know is liberating and freeing – it is also completely fresh and new because no one in this way has done this before. As individual as your own finger prints.

Making my NLP Training and Hypnotherapy Training business fully functional and successful has not been some walk in the park. It has been at times extremely hard and effortful work yet always rewarding. In the early years there were a couple of times where I literally had no money and had to borrow from friends and family to eat.

What is absolutely wonderful now and I occasionally need to pinch myself is that I have created an amazing lifestyle for myself where I get to help all manner of people to empower and take more charge of their life. Take more charge of their emotions and more fully do more of what they want or don’t want to do. This is my calling or purpose in life and I get paid and make a good living doing this valuable work.

If you are reading this far then it is fair to assume that you have some interest in NLP. And you should know there are no guarantees that doing an NLP Practitioner training will give you the freedom and lifestyle you want.

Those kind of massive personal transformations require hard work, practise and time. What you will get through an NLP training are the processes that can and most likely will help you make the right kind of changes that support your personal evolution and help you to have a much more enjoyable life connecting more deeply with the right people and nurturing positive relationships.

What You Need To Know About The Kinds Of NLP Trainings Available

When there are no other alternatives this can be the only solution. I think about NLP Practitioner ‘online certification’ as the last resort. The whole and necessary human interaction is missing and it is essential in developing the required feedback loop you only get with real people on a live training.

Did you know that around 80% of self help book and that includes the copious NLP self help books are bough and never read? Of those who do a little reading many don’t do the all important exercises as you will discover NLP application is not a theoretical subject.

And for sure even with live trainings you really won’t be able to master all of your emotions and you certainly won’t be able to cure anyones phobia in minutes. That is the proverbal rubbish that you shouldn’t believe because its right up there with the ‘Earn a 7 figure sum coaching’ or ‘Write a best seller in a week’ nonsense that gets bandied around.

Books can help as a companion to actual live training. Assuming you know how to drive or swim how do you feel about a ‘learn to swim book’ ?

Some questions you may be asking are :

  1. Is the facilitators style ‘classroom’ descriptions or experiential training? Because one of these may suit you much better.
  2. Is there a good balance ( 20% : 80% ) of theory to practice?
  3. Will your facilitators attitude, playfulness and style work well with you?
  4. What level of experience does your facilitator actually have?
  5. What is the duration and cost of the training course?

The Newcastle NLP Master Practitioner is 18 days direct contact hours. This is 3 days per month, Friday-Sunday. Master Practitioner begins September 2013 and completes February 2014.

NLP Master Practitioner

Newcastle NLP Master Practitioner in NLP offers unbeatable price and exceptional training for NLP Practitioners who are ready to take knowledge, experience and application to a higher level.

One of the core principles of NLP is modelling. Modelling is precisely how the technology, the art and science of NLP actually happened. The processes and techniques offered on NLP Practitioner training are the results or consequences of modelling.

NLP Master Practitioner Newcastle

In addition to learning how to model in two complementary ways you will be deepening and extending your skills in NLP. This really does mean practising mastery and mastering practice. This is the Communicating Excellence Master Practitioner NLP Training in Newcastle.

In our culture we can all be forgiven for towing the status quo of mediocrity. Our society used to be one of work for money, work hard, have children and buy as many creature comforts as we could.

Most likely more than often the associated happiness wears out and there is a renewed requirement to work harder to buy more. Before we die. This way of living is going the way of the Dodo.

The more addictions addictions and distractions we used to be able to amass would lead to the need for more of the same. Perhaps to comfort us from and away from the inevitable death that comes to all.

NLP is certainly not the miracle path to some kind of spiritual liberation yet aspects of NLP do for many provide the foundations of personal liberation from fear, anxiety and addictions.

This equates to some kind of real freedom and when applied well, a freedom in the now. A way to enjoy life more fully in the present.

The NLP Master Practitioner is delivered over six month with one module per month Friday-Sunday. The modular components are as follows.

NLP Modelling

This is the unconscious uptake methodology originally used and developed by Dr John Grinder and Dr Richard Bandler to assimilate the Meta and Milton models that are the foundations of NLP Practitioner Training.

This involves using New Code NLP applications to access ‘know nothing’ states, akin to beginners mind, that is the basic state for unconscious uptake modelling.

Through a series of drill and exercises participants learn how to model at very deep levels with a prior commitment to understand nothing and simply copy. As my friend and mentor simply states, this is monkey see – monkey do.

NLP Analytical Modelling

Using the work of David Gordon students are walked through the experiential array method of collecting and modelling the structure of experience.

This is an excellent complement to NLP Modelling. In this instance we use questions and calibration to elicit the hows, whys, what ifs and motivations in a kind of listing program that delivers a step wise method of the doing of a real skill.

NLP Advanced Linguistics

This module, through a structural set of experiences, demonstrations and exercises will sharpen your Meta Modelling skills set. You will be unlikely to hear, use and process language in the same ways again following this module.

Here we explore Framing and directing of experience, Sleight of Mouth, Metaphor as objects, substances and containers and the ‘Clean Therapy’ – content imposition model. We make the distinctions between content vs context imposition and the necessary paradox of double binds.

Advanced NLP Submodalities

Drawing on the work of Steve Andreas, we use the internal subjective structure of experience to elicit and define individual evidence based sub modalities or stored and encoded experience to to create and utilise templates of ‘how’ a person congruently knows anything.

These elicited templates are then uses to transform, change and create new, desired characteristics, behaviours and traits to support outcomes, goals and personal projects.

NLP Meta Programs

An in-depth and practical exploration and utilisation of the deep behavioural and cognitive ways people think and act from. Usually unconscious and based in the work of Carl Jung we learn how to recognise our own and others presenting meta programs.

Your Training Commitment

  • To support your group
  • To be open to experience
  • To fully participate in all exercises
  • To make mistakes
  • To have fun in learning

And of course

  • Arrive in good time
  • Ask lots of questions
  • And to have fun in learning ( again )
