NLP Submodalities in action – Making change stick

NLP Submodalities. One of our natural and normal instincts is to move towards the kinds of experiences, habits and beliefs we like, which are good and beneficial and our other natural response is to move away for the kinds of experiences, habits and beliefs we don’t like, which are bad and not salubrious.

This should make immediate sense. The simplest of cells, of which we are largely composed of, demonstrate sentience. Sentience is like intelligence as commonly defined. Plants mostly turn towards the sun, showing heliotropism. Little monkeys,  deprived of their mother, show a preference for a furry warm counterpart and not a cold milk feeder, as Harry Harlow demonstrated.

NLP Submodalities

One of the many evidential stories in the excellent ‘Before You Know It’ – book by John Bargh describes how addicts with about an hour of training each day for two weeks, make statistically significant, long term change.

These people, all volunteers, were given a task of identifying photographs as either vertical or horizontal in nature and on recognition would either push or pull a lever. What was not identified to them consciously is that the photographs with their addictive substance would always be paired with a photograph that was to be pushed.

This was intended and indeed did increase the unconscious avoidance  mechanisms in people with respect to their addictive drug. This by no means was any sort of perfect cure yet was very significant in lowering relapse rates.

In this study, Reinout Wiers and his team helped people change their unconscious attitudes towards an addictive behaviour by pairing or anchoring the human ( and cell like ) avoidance behaviour, push away to their addiction, or at least a picture of it.

NLP Submodalities are classically the manipulation or changing of the smaller lego bricks of our representations of five senses. Or six senses in you include a sense of humour. For instance in the visual field, the submodalities include colour, distance, luminosity and visual-spatial location.

So as science, once again, seems to offer great validity to NLP techniques, in this instance a NLP Submodalities intervention, which NLPistas will recognise also includes a Meta Program, move away, move towards. You should also note the move away, move towards preference is as old as the hills and did not originate with NLP. And Meta Programs are not separate from Submodalities!

What, to me, is of greatest significance is this intervention was repeated hundreds if not thousands of times. This is where critics of such an NLP Submodalities intervention may say it didn’t work. More accurately the operator and the recipient didn’t work enough.

Repetition is critical to move any conscious skill into the unconscious arena. Repetition is the key to making this kind of intervention work and stick.

NLP Submodality Intervention – Making it Stick!

Firstly make a commitment to yourself to apply the time each day for a week or two to repetitively do the following exercise as described. I suggest doing this for twenty minutes a day.

  1. Make a mental image of the habit you want to stop. Close your eyes.
  2. Make and feel disgust. You know the face. Wrinkled nose.
  3. Physically push away the image of the habit you are going to stop. In your imaginations as you physically push away the image, see the image going off into the distance.
  4. Open your eyes. Smile, count to five and repeat steps 1-4.

My journey with NLP began around 2002-2003 and initially my interests were purely for curiosity and self development. I was ( and still am ) absolutely fascinated with the aspects of language and communication NLP has to offer because being better able to understand myself and understand others is a required life skill.

As my training and understanding of NLP continued I really did start to see the world through new eyes. This for me involved exploring some of my deep beliefs and old perceptions that were preventing me from living the life I truly wanted. This involved understanding and then changing old behaviours.

Perhaps its because I love learning and applying what I learn to make life even better that by 2005 I had completed an NLP Practitioner, Hypnotherapy, NLP Trainer Trainer and NLP Master Practitioner in that order.

Even then I didn’t know I wanted to change careers from a software developer to and NLP and Hypnotherapy training facilitator. I was combining the software job with working with hypnotherapy clients but not until I took a real good look at my life in 2005 was it that I decided to do both what I love and that can really and effectively benefit others too.

The beauty in learning NLP is that there is massive enphasis on practical ( not theoretical ) training so learning NLP is actually very easy and straight forward.

I don’t know, perhaps you don’t fully know or you have some very concrete ideas. Your journey will be fun, enlightening and you will meet wonderful people along the way.

NLP Practitioner Training In Newcastle – Help in Troubling Times

It might feel like freedoms and liberties are being steadily eroded in the current disturbing political climate. The attempted privatization of the NHS and the deplorable lack of funding in schools and communities. Basics such as food and fuel are rising faster than wages. An unknown and uncertain future with Brexit and world leaders acting like children at a nursery, all be it a nuclear nursery.

NLP Practitioner Training in Newcastle : August 17

When you are considering taking an NLP Training there are the obvious aspects of your skills you will improve. These include developing better communication and relationship skills, known as Rapport in NLP.

One of the less obvious areas of personal development could be called expanding you consciousness of what can be termed spirituality. This has nothing to do with religion but a greater perception and connection with your entire world.

NLP Practitioners January-June 2017

Becoming more connected within your body-mind is part of NLP. This is because during the training we are integrating our psychological and our somatic processes. Dissolving the ridiculous idea of a mind body split. This is a direct step up in spiritual realisation.

One consequence of this kind of NLP training is to address the all too common problems of over thinking ( which produces anxiety and self doubt ) and simply using your physiology to act and then refine the results.

People will choose to attend an NLP training for a vast variety of reasons from personal development, enhancing language and communications skills and to incorporate the NLP skill set into their existing work. One aspect of what can be called becoming more confident is to examine ‘limiting beliefs’.

And in an atmosphere of safety and exploration create the context of experiences where limiting beliefs can be dissolved and new enabling beliefs, for instance confidence, can flourish and be reinforced with practice.

An NLP Practitioner here in Newcastle is the first step to attend the Clinical Hypnotherapy Training. While NLP is certainly packed full of ‘therapeutic ‘ and ‘coaching’ tools, the primary focus is in developing a highly transferable skills set in relationships, communication and self motivated effectiveness.

There is a huge emphasis on being a highly supportive and friendly group training with the accent on fun in learning. This is a foundation skill set for Clinical Hypnotherapy training where the accent then becomes powerful-relational therapeutic and coaching tools for client work.

The Communicating Excellence NLP Newcastle Practitioner Training is entirely practically based. The accent is on Learning Through Doing. In order to effectively utilise the NLP techniques there is no requirement for theory. NLP is a highly practical subject. No exams, just learning NLP through practice.

NLP, as neuro-science and psychology research advance practically every NLP process can be ‘validated’ by the research but research wont affect a practitioner being able to apply the tools and techniques. So this training is about practical application, learning through doing and having fun doing it!

We are increasingly living in a world where there is less security and more instability in our jobs, our public services and seemingly a government which cares more about private profit than the public they serve. When applied NLP Training will enhance and empower you ability to create and nurture relationships with the people that matter. Will let you talk other peoples language and communicate more effectively to ethically shape your outcomes. This helping you define and create your own realities.

Want to Attend Clinical Hypnotherapy Training in Newcastle 2017?

It was well over ten years ago when I did my first hypnotherapy training. I was very lucky as I did training with my teacher who became a real friend – Alan Jones. Someone who was experienced in hypnotherapy and for me could teach it technically and emotionally with lots of demonstrations. I was taught very well.

It’s just about impossible to know you are making a very good decision at the time of making it. Yes of course I had both a good idea and good feeling about joining the hypnotherapy training – but most of all, at that time, I was deeply interested and committed to the idea of learning hypnotherapy.

Hypnotherapy Training Newcastle

When I joined the hypnotherapy training I had no intentions of making this my business or way of life – I didn’t realise that I would be able to help people with the psychological, behavioral and sometimes physical issues that we all face. Me, I just wanted to learn it!

In just over a year from having completed the training, gained a wealth of experience working with clients I was invited to co-train with Alan. Perhaps a stroke of luck or perhaps the meeting of opportunity and lots of commitment.

The foundations of the hypnotherapy I learned and now teach are bases in NLP or Neuro Linguistic Programming as this provides the core skills to work well with people in solution orientated ways.

Following on from an NLP training, clinical hypnotherapy provides a rich and powerful set of approaches for working professionally with real people. And as all people are not the same, have different requirements and different beliefs we need a variety of robust and flexible approaches to assisting clients.

Good hypnotherapy is absolutely not about reading scripts to your clients in your best hypnotic voice. A client may as well by a hypnosis CD. Although such contraptions can work they are invariably not specific to your client. And clients who are genuinely invested in making changes in their life will seek professional assistance.

The Clinical Hypnotherapy training in Newcastle will over five months cover all of the aspects that you will need to work effectively with your clients. This of course involved you practicing outside of the course to fully develop your skills.

The training is very practical in nature so you will learn through cycles of demonstration, doing and reflection. It’s actually very easy to learn when you commit to effortful practice.

The prerequsite for the Clinical Hypnotherapy training which begins August 2017 is attending an NLP practitioner training ( which will include many elements of hypnotherapy ) beginning this January on 28th.

We all have patterns of behaviour. Most of the time our intrinsic patterns work very well in our daily lives. NLP has the benefit of showing us many of our own unconscious patterns of thought and behaviour. Imagine the value of learning new patterns of behaviour and thoughts that offer us more flexibility and choice.

NLP Practitioner Newcastle August 2016

I didn’t know a single thing about NLP when I attended a weekend introductory course. I was there by pure accident or simple fate. What happened from there changed my life in incredible ways.

Attending the NLP Practitioner was one of the single most useful and life changing things I have done. The tools and techniques helped me change how I thought and communicated. I had totally new ways to relate to others and be much more able to take someone else’s perspectives and understand better.

One aspect of the training is in discovering in a very real sense, what we already know, yet aren’t necessarily consciously aware of. These little discoveries often bring those light bulb moments of deep realisation. One such aspect for me is NLP’s Meta Model.

During that initial training, most of the participants seemed to be very confused about the Meta Model. I think they were stuck on the labels and desperately trying to understand something prematurely. A common experience in so much adult learning. My truth is the Meta Model is incredible easy to learn to use well.

There is absolutely no need to know the labels or terminology. What I learned was how to use the Meta Model to much better understand what people are saying as well as how problems can be both created and resolved. Understanding how to make sense of language is an incredible valuable life skill for me, which is used personally and professionally.

I gained important new and different perspectives about how I think and process information. I also was encouraged to consider what I truly wanted in life.

These teaching and deep learnings lead me to study hypnotherapy, which ultimately lead to a career change to do something meaningful and enjoyable for myself. But that is another story.

This coming August over nine days I am facilitating an NLP Practitioner training in Newcastle. This is a training that will offer you valuable tools and insights that could make your life and your interactions even more interesting.

There are currently eight places still available. The training is fantastic value at £595. For details of the NLP Practitioner and booking please click on this LINK.

Happiness, Watzlawick and NLP Practitioner Training in Newcastle

As we move from 2015 into a new year of 2016, there are many aspects of our life which I believe will benefit greatly from a certain class of improvements. Moving pretty rapidly beyond having enough resources to live in security and comfort, this class of improvements will be the kinds that create genuine compassion and succinctly and simply nurture happiness.

The purpose of this post is to invite you to watch a video ( which is below ) that is about perhaps not a new way ( its very old ) but likely a way to think differently and more relationally about your own situations and certainly being a citizen of the world, to think differently about the world we are a part of along with all of the other people we share this blue life giving marble with.

This idea to share comes to me as I have been revisiting much of the material I started reading almost 15 years ago as I began my journey of NLP. Particularly I have been revisiting works of Gregory Bateson, Paul Watzlawick and Joseph Campbell. There are certain themes that are shared and hopefully should you read and research them, perhaps, you will get deep insights into what Bateson called ‘the pattern which connects’ and perhaps you will change certain aspects in how you think, act and are in this world…

Many a great philosopher, scientist and spiritual teacher have understood in the West where there are in our time, truly great advances in science and medicine which certainly have the potential to eradicate hunger and wars, as there are more than enough resources for the entire earth, noticed that there seems to be very little spiritual ( one meaning of this to me is world wide compassion and sharing in an inter-personal way ) evolution.

Remember that a staggering half of the worlds wealth is held be 1% of the population. This is an unrepresented moral inequality.

In Lakoffs excellent book ‘Moral Politics’ he discusses a term ‘Privateering’ as being how corporations ( in bed with governments – who we elect ) have and are turning societal services which governments should protect and run for their citizens into private services which strip wealth from citizens. Look at our national health service in the UK or the formally named ‘Blackwater’ security service in the USA as examples.

Lakoff also explores ‘Framing’ as a way of hardwiring certain concepts into our brains which can tend to get people to vote against their own interests, values and beliefs.

A frame can be thought of structuring values, ideas and ways of thinking in line with your own purposes. Frames such as ‘war on terror’, ‘Councils forced to make more cuts’, and ‘politicians to get pay rise’ have a tendency to evoke a certain way of thinking and emotions. And most of this though is well below the threshold of consciousness.

On an intra-personal branch, how we relate to ourselves, much of the thinking an individual will do is again unconscious and the little of what we are conscious of can seem like both a reality and a belief, for good, ill or somewhere in the middle. The frames, meta-programs and our conditioning that are alive and active ( how are these activated? How are these changed? ) as it stands can lead to us being fearful or joyful in any variety of situations. Where the strong influence on our emotions and thoughts can seem out of our own hands.

Being happy is all peoples birth right as humans. The Dalai Lama has a strong accent on being happy. It is said that the purpose of life is to be happy. Buddhism as one of the worlds oldest spiritual / life practices has a strong accent on human beings and the main teachings of human illumination are freedom from fear and desire ( two major frames used to shape thinking in politics ) and also a freedom of what society might term social duty, especially when many aspects of what is deemed right in society is clearly flawed and serve so very few.

Just one of the many ways of reshaping our consciousness and our deep frames and narratives is exploring both how we think and having an idea of how we think we are in a position to change the structure. Changing previously unconscious modes of thought, especially their meanings, does actually take time, effort and practice. And this is a worthwhile life practice.

NLP has a strong accent on process or the how something is accomplished. Its like learning the scales on a guitar, the rules for programming a computer or what happens when an artist mixes colours of paint. Once you have and understand these basic principles or fundamental process structures and their relationships, you can create your own art.

The basic unit of learning according to Bateson is difference. Exploring the differences that make a difference in a positive way in your own life and those who you are relating with, for me is one of the real gifts in NLP. Some details of NLP training in Newcastle beginning January 2016 are following this inspiring video from Paul Watzlawick.

Here is a deep and prophetic video of Watzlawick [ When the solution is the problem (1987) ]. Now this is subtitled so you really will need to invest some time and effort … and it will be well worth it!

Taking an NLP Training for very many people has a rather profound and positive effect in their life. Now NLP will not dramatically change your life, its you that can do that. What NLP offers are processes which can lead you to new and different ways of acting and being in the world … perhaps the ways where you learn to make yourself feel more resilient and feel happier more of the time.

Newcastle NLP Practitioner Training – Enhancing Freedom and Relationships

Taking the August 2015 NLP Practitioner training you are going to be experiencing how to draw deeper into two of the most powerful and transformative learnings you can experience.

One of the most useful things we can learn is to learn about ourself and how we can use this knowledge to improve our experience in life. By understanding how we think and process experience we can be more resilient and flexible with the problems and opportunities we will all face.

NLP Practitioner Training Newcastle August 2015

One of the other most useful things we can learn is to learn that other people will process experience differently to ourself. Using this knowledge can really assist us in developing and creating better relationships and understandings with other people.

Neurolinguistic Programming NLP is a well established set of process tools and attitudes that when applied and practised offers new and highly complementary ways to engage in life, relationships with more freedom and understandings.

I first became fascinated with NLP in the early 2000’s and nearly fifteen years later continue to enjoy and practice a neurolinguistic approach. Our experience in life has an internal and external structure. Becoming familiar with such structures gives us tools we can apply to reconnect with our birthright of peace of mind and that ability to be more resourceful in any situation.

My learning and practice of NLP made the opportunities and discoveries in my choosing to learn hypnotherapy and coaching skills which paved the way in 2005 for me to leave a well paid yet for me unrewarding job in software engineering to start my own business which is now teaching NLP and Hypnotherapy as well as working 1:1 as a therapist and coach.

As a result I have a much better quality of living where I both get plenty of time for myself with the people I care about most and do a great deal of good in the world ( highly questionable with the software I was writing ) sharing knowledge and skills with wonderful people.

Who Is This Newcastle NLP Training Suitable For?

This training is for anyone wanting to learn about Neurolinguistic Programming as an applied skill. This will not be an intellectual lesson! For people wanting applied and highly experiential training you can apply in your life.

Suitable for serious up-skilling and learning new process tools to transform your inner and outer world in life, business, coaching and therapy.

Newcastle NLP Practitioner Training August 2015

Just under 14  years ago in 2001 years ago I attended an NLP Introduction training, over the next three years I was so attracted to the results of this personal exploration of how I could change my thoughts, behaviours and shape more of the kind of future I wanted, NLP turned into my professional career.

From very early on in my explorations of NLP, I discovered that using the NLP process helped me realise my deeper personal freedom. I mean freedom to radically alter my thoughts and responses to different situations. Which means having massive influence on what I feel and what I choose to do.

NLP Practitioner Training

Course Graduates April 2014

The application of NLP, fuelled and ultimately changed many aspects of how I live and how I act in, and perceive life. The process orientated and experiential ways of being, from an NLP Practitioner training and onwards, gradually filtered through my old conditioning.

You can read about how using NLP I went form a job I hated to a purposeful career.

As old conditionings dropped away my life opened up to new dimensions of living and ways of experiencing life in positively new and different ways; and  in ways I doubt I would have not experienced without my NLP journey.

Personal freedom is available to everyone yet most people like myself need to be shown the tools to make it happen. The tools to learn to change habitual negative thinking patterns into more useful ones. The tools to change aspects of old beliefs into empowering ones.

Yet NLP will not change you at all. Your personal development requires your active participation. Your use of and reflection with NLP patterns and process will give you the tools and techniques to change yourself. As it were to update your operating systems with practice, over time.

NLP can have a particularly powerful effect on how we communicate. Generally NLP Practitioners become more congruent and understanding of others as well as themselves. This tends to increase our effectiveness in the world.

Who This NLP Practitioner Course Will Benefit – People Desiring to :

  • Develop more effective communication skills
  • Strengthen emotional resilience
  • Enhance employment prospects
  • Learn Coaching and Therapeutic Practices
  • Become more effective students of life

The NLP training is experiential in nature so there are no exams, tests or death by powerpoint. Exercises and developmental integration of skills is at the heart of learning and utilising NLP to grow and develop and in ways update and enhance who you are and what you do. I feel this is a key to personal freedom.

#TAG – Guru-Kanga Will Never Free You But They May Point A Way

An NLP Practitioner training will offer you structured practices in a very wide variety of techniques that are geared towards your own personal psychological well being.

The tools and process inherent in NLP are of great utility in the helping professions by way of therapeutic interventions and also directly relevant to you with enhancing opportunities with powerful communication skills.

I am much more interested in participants having real skills as oppose to a highly theoretical understanding of techniques. There are no powerpoint offerings. There are demonstrations and then lots of practice so you really understand the deep principles by way of practice.

Do you want serious skills so you can be more successful, more peaceful and more effective at your work with others? Of course the answer is certainly yes. But do you think that will happen without basics and practice? Well possibly … thought without relevant frames of reference, relevant practice and relevant knowledge I think highly unlikely.

What I want to share with you are some thoughts and experiences, what I call The Transmission Effect and what I call ‘The No Structures Vacuum’. This is both simple and complex at the same time but isn’t it always?

It’s simple in that you will have almost certainly been in the immediate company of someone who ‘transmits’ ( you may think of Joseph Campbell, Mariane Diamond, John Grinder, Neil DeGrasse Tyson, Richard Dawkins, Pema Chodron or The Dali Lama ) irrespective if you agree with their sentiments or not; They are very congruent in their messages. We go to see these experts to gain their knowledge and wisdom but are we always prepared to put the graft in to really getting it as a replicable process or skill?

Being in the presence of such a transmitter, for most who actively listen and engage in set exercises or drills, will leave with some kind of deep experience where the principles, perhaps more that the words will be remembered. Their sharings or more specifically their stories touch at a far deeper level than just words. For me, these people are what I call transmitters.

It’s complex in the sense that what they transmit, at least as far as I can understand, is deeply rooted in structures and process that have taken them a life time to master and continue to shape.

The No Structures Vacuum is what is all so often realised by attending some talk, watching a DVD or being inspired by a halo affected presenter. Think shopping channel, think effortless weight loss info-mercial, think one week later another miracle weight loss product in the cupboard under the stairs gathering dust.

The No Structures Vacuum is the missing link between information and concepts to actual practice and knowledge.

Let me offer an example:

OK now you know about Marian Diamond’s 5 essentials for a healthy brain ( 7 minutes in ). You can have all the stories and factual information you can get but unless you actively seek these out and apply it’s just information.

Many people will attend a workshop, buy a self help book or audio and ‘hope’ that somehow a miraculous transmission of an experts skills will manifest magically into their neurology.

You won’t be surprised that this mostly does not happen. I believe this is because there are no structures developed enough to make this ‘miracle’ just happen.
Miracle products look and feel great because they are marketed to hit our emotional desire centres hard; Activating what we perceive is ‘missing from our lives’ offering the solution to ‘our problems’ and almost always usually won’t work without some active and prolonged effort.

Because real skill or particularly long term positive effects require structures that you build through practice and effort.

I have recently been to an excellent talk by Dicken Bettinger in Manchester. This was a 3 Principles talk. Do you mean you don’t know about the 3P’s? It’s relatively new wave idea in the world of NLP, Coaching and the Self Improvement .

The 3P’s is the work of Sydney Banks and has been around for decades. and as I understand it has been used at a high level in many business for a long time not unlike NLP.

Several of the top NLP, Coaches, Change Workers in the world are using a3P’s and writing books about the 3P’s and running 3P workshops. Working with 3P’s now may be both a highly lucrative venture as well as an up to date ‘kind of’ spiritual practice that is the new scene.

All of these giants of world class coaches, trainers and change workers have many things in common. One huge one is they have been learning and developing their own deep structures through practice and time for many many years. That to me is why they are world class.

So back to the workshop from Dicken

I was very curious to hear, from a long established proponent of 3P’s what it was all about. I have to say what I had read, watched and gleaned from the internet was confusing for me. I went with no expectations at all, just anticipations to get a clear sense of what this 3P’s is all about. I feel my anticipations were fulfilled.

Quite literally two days of storytelling that for me was inspiring to listen to. Many examples from Dickens own life, parallels Buddhism and other traditions. Recollections of Sydney Banks as teachings and personal stories. Something that really came across was the freshness of Dickens words. He said he was speaking from inspiration, from a quiet mind. The word intention was mentioned many times.

Dicken as a world class and highly engaging speaker mentioned that he has meditated for around 30 years regularly and sometimes many hours; at the expense of family relationships and discovering his meditations for calm went awry and often didn’t work in the real world. Yet he stayed with them for decades. Then I understand he found the 3P’s.

Having spent decades meditating, laying down of neural structures and in his decades as a professional change worker ( I think he said psychotherapist ) laying down other structures, the time doing this was not missed to me.

I have been practising fairly regular meditation for years and the meditation I am currently engaged with is extremely useful to me and for me in lots of ways. I have been building structures.

I have been interested in ‘spirituality’ for many years, listening to ‘gurus’, ‘enlightened people’ both contemplating and doing the exercises inherent in their offerings, again I have been building structures. The more I listen, say a month later or a year later to the same offering I usually get a deeper meaning or a different insight.

The transmission effect without structures seems to create ‘states’ or fleeting experiences that don’t last. Ken Wilber suggests practice over time can transform states into permanent traits. I hope you really make the distinction because it is very important in transforming information into practical real world skills.

The best experiences can’t be talked about. The next best are often misunderstood because they are attempting to talk about the best by way of metaphor and analogy and are not to be taken literally.

Walk your own path, not the one that your culture or society placed upon you.

The next training takes place January 2015.
