VALUABLE LANGUAGE PATTERNS FOR YOU

How can you make your communication more impactful if you don’t study language patterns? NLP is about Language Patterns being used to create great rapport and at the same time with huge integrity.

If you haven’t guessed one of my passions is the use of language to get ideas across. This is one one Erickson’s many definitions of hypnosis. “Hypnosis is a process of transferring ideas”. Ideas or experiences via story can and do become beliefs, more often than not unconscious.

We know this because we are a story telling species and that can be seen in our relatively late, some five and a half thousand years ago in the cuneiform of Mesopotamia. Our religious books are not text book but parables, stories.

Let’s take a very quick look at an idea that is generally accepted for the literal believer from the bible. The idea of Sin and Repentance. You know the slippery snake that convinced Eve and then Adam to bite a forbidden apple.

A Greek word, hamartia, which literally means ‘missing the mark’ was translated as per now as ‘sin’. There is no sin in missing the mark or going off track. Repentance in that same book is a translation of ‘metanoia’ which means ‘course correct’.

Words are powerful and they have consequences. When you can get your words, your communications to be truthful, trustworthy and to the point you can have much more impact.

2 VALUABLE LANGUAGE & BEHAVIOR INTERACTIONS FOR YOU

1. Begin with a Rhetorical Question

Instead of beginning with a statement, even worse telling someone ‘you need to know’ or ‘you have to listen’ or ‘don’t you think that …’ open with a rhetorical question. Specifically one where you are almost unilaterally going to get agreement or at least almost no opposition. This is from Frank Luntz.

How can you really improve your communication skills if you don’t have the tools? How can we trust politicians when they flout their own rules?

This is a form of Rapport and Pacing. There is nothing to disagree with and everything to agree with.

2. Alliteration

In order to help your clients, your prospective clients and anyone you want a message to stick with, use alliteration; that’s using the same letter or sound in a triplet or doublet of words. Again from Luntz and many others..

Better, Smarter, Faster
Maternal, Meaningful, Modern

Repetition make ideas more memorable so they stick

I wrote a little about my initial experience and expectations of NLP last year. If you are interested you can read this here.

If you are expecting class room style training with power point slides you will be disappointed!  You could get that from a book.

With this training the emphasis is experiential learning so your NLP understandings come from your experience. What you understand you know!

We all have patterns of behaviour. Most of the time our intrinsic patterns work very well in our daily lives. NLP has the benefit of showing us many of our own unconscious patterns of thought and behaviour. Imagine the value of learning new patterns of behaviour and thoughts that offer us more flexibility and choice.

Newcastle NLP Practitioner Training – Enhancing Freedom and Relationships

Taking the August 2015 NLP Practitioner training you are going to be experiencing how to draw deeper into two of the most powerful and transformative learnings you can experience.

One of the most useful things we can learn is to learn about ourself and how we can use this knowledge to improve our experience in life. By understanding how we think and process experience we can be more resilient and flexible with the problems and opportunities we will all face.

NLP Practitioner Training Newcastle August 2015

One of the other most useful things we can learn is to learn that other people will process experience differently to ourself. Using this knowledge can really assist us in developing and creating better relationships and understandings with other people.

Neurolinguistic Programming NLP is a well established set of process tools and attitudes that when applied and practised offers new and highly complementary ways to engage in life, relationships with more freedom and understandings.

I first became fascinated with NLP in the early 2000’s and nearly fifteen years later continue to enjoy and practice a neurolinguistic approach. Our experience in life has an internal and external structure. Becoming familiar with such structures gives us tools we can apply to reconnect with our birthright of peace of mind and that ability to be more resourceful in any situation.

My learning and practice of NLP made the opportunities and discoveries in my choosing to learn hypnotherapy and coaching skills which paved the way in 2005 for me to leave a well paid yet for me unrewarding job in software engineering to start my own business which is now teaching NLP and Hypnotherapy as well as working 1:1 as a therapist and coach.

As a result I have a much better quality of living where I both get plenty of time for myself with the people I care about most and do a great deal of good in the world ( highly questionable with the software I was writing ) sharing knowledge and skills with wonderful people.

Who Is This Newcastle NLP Training Suitable For?

This training is for anyone wanting to learn about Neurolinguistic Programming as an applied skill. This will not be an intellectual lesson! For people wanting applied and highly experiential training you can apply in your life.

Suitable for serious up-skilling and learning new process tools to transform your inner and outer world in life, business, coaching and therapy.

Some of the things you can anticipate are to :

  • Enhance and Expand Your Communications Skills
  • Feel More Resourceful in Any Situation
  • Make Better More Dynamic Relationships
  • Create You Path to Well-being and Peace of Mind
  • Become a More Integral Influencer
  • See Bigger Picture Systemic Relationships
  • Discover the Power to Change Your Situation

This is Something All Hypnotherapists Need to Watch … Failure

Having been in the close company of several world class and well known facilitators of change some of whom are the people I consider the most able, they have on occasion failed miserably to create change. Some failures I have known from direct experience and some via their stories.

Knowing and seeing this that even the ‘best’ can fail and fail completely is a source of liberation from perfectionism. Forcing one’s increasing efforts for diminishing returns onto another person exacerbates resistance and serves no one; unless this is a part of a process.

I would like to you watch the following DVD. Its Milton Erickson the world acclaimed hypotherapist which many in the field of NLP will know as their model of hypno-therapeutic language ( a part of how Erickson worked ) who’s work spawned the Milton Model. Erickson did so much more and as can be seen here to have failed with direct suggestion.

The small number of therapists who think they must always create some kind of change by way of their compliance or more puzzling the ones who are convinced that their one protocol ( a one-trick-pony, the one right way ) works for all are missing two of the most important aspects of engendering change – and these are feedback and all clients are different.

On the NLP courses I offer there are a minimum of three days devoted to hypnosis and hypnotherapy. While the Milton Model language aspects are offered these are incorporated inside of doing actual hypnosis which is much more valuable.

Most students with their fellow explorers experience direct hypnotic phenomena and of course being able to initiate a trance experience. And while the learning how to use hypnotic language is important being comfortable in any seeming failure and somehow utilising this response is way more important.

It’s more important for the practitioner and for our clients – why? Because it is invaluable learning in you can and will fail and where then to go with failure.

Having watched the Erickson video you can see the the very best can fail and fail spectacularly. You can also see there is no attachment to the specific suggestion or even the technique.

If you are interested in learning hypnotherapy and NLP in Newcastle then you can explore the courses I offer.

Hypnotherapy Training in Newcastle

How I went from a job I hated, where I felt totally unappreciated and unfulfilled to discovering a purposeful way I do what I love to do and make a really good living helping people enrich their life.

In 1999 I got my dream job as a software programmer. I was self taught during a carer break where I discovered my previous dream degree related job was not all I imagined it to be. I was working offshore and making the connections between being in prison and living on an oil rig. Yes for sure it was very well paid but and it is a big but I was really not happy.

When I spoke to my family and closest friends about my emotional state, how I was hating working offshore they all pointed out their opinion on the money front. With what I was earning I could ‘retire’ in five years and buy lots of property and there was genuine job security. This was all true but I felt soulless and I was not feeling right with my lot.

All but one, they all told me to stick it out. One suggested I come home and start a restaurant with them. I took the cowards way out, the only way I could and quit my offshore job. But not to start a restaurant, that one luckily, in hind site, fell through.

I did have enough squirrelled away to take a year out and teach myself programming. See, I wanted to be a computer game programmer. I loved the idea of getting paid well to do something I loved to do and I was in love with computer games. So how to make that happen? For nearly a year every day I used my savings to live and study from text books the arts and science of programming. Now this is what I will call a total geek, me! That kind of geekeyness has never left and it is such as asset!

Grace Testimonial

Grace Testimonial

Well I did get a job in programming. It wasn’t game programming but it was programing and within a few years I had risen towards the top of a well principled Newcastle based software company that was in the business of medical imaging and oil and gas imaging. I loved that job and I really did – It wasn’t a job, it was a calling. Well kind of. That was until it went totally corporate and was bought out, as many highly successful oil related ventures do. But what was really the issue, yet again, was my emotional state. This time though it was going to be different. Why was this different this time you might ask?

In 2002 I had begun a journey into the world of Neurolinguistic Programming or NLP. At first just a couple of introductory courses which really sparked my interest in how I could alter and manage my own emotional state and that really equated to taking much more charge of my life and coming out of a poor me or as some call it a victim mentality.

I had done training with a well know local NLP Practitioner training provider in Newcastle and since completing the NLP Practitioner level course I was very different in how and what I could do to better manage my thoughts, my emotions and how I behaved in the world. I was still unsatisfied with my job as a programmer and I realised I was the source and solution of my problems.

Amy Testimonial

Amy Testimonial

To say the NLP bug bit me and bit deep was ( and still is ) an understatement. I was reading, writing and watching everything I could about NLP. I was practising NLP for hours each and every day and this continued over the next year or so. My family and friends thought I had joined a cult because on one New Years day I was driving to Northallerton to attend an NLP Practice group when my friends were going to the pub to make an out out day of it.

What I was doing was everything I could to positively affect my situation and this is clear to see because in 2005 I completed my first NLP Trainer Trainer before I had completed my NLP Master Practitioner while I completed my first Hypnotherapy training. When I say NLP became my life I am quite sure about that. I was the first person I know of to complete a  NLP Trainer Trainer before the NLP Master Practitioner.

What I love about NLP ( and there are other ways too ) is that with practice just about anyone can live a more happy and more fulfilled life. It teaches how to run your own brain and how to use language in ways that are extremely liberating. I was so sure about this and the positive effects with me that I wanted to share NLP with whoever wanted to live a more fulfilling and happier life. The equation is simple to me. If more people are happy, kinder and more understanding of others then the world is a much better place.

In 2005 I resigned and presently left the Newcastle Technopole building by Manors Metro for the last time. I remember walking away, not looking back, looking forward, thinking I will never set foot in that building or work for that company again. The sense of freedom and conviction comes back now as I right this and it feels very very good.

That was a very beautiful and powerful experience for me because I had decided to start my own NLP Training business and go full time working with clients using hypnotherapy. It was also a little scary too because to fund this venture I had chosen to sell my house as well as resign. I was walking my own path and this for those who know is liberating and freeing – it is also completely fresh and new because no one in this way has done this before. As individual as your own finger prints.

Making my NLP Training and Hypnotherapy Training business fully functional and successful has not been some walk in the park. It has been at times extremely hard and effortful work yet always rewarding. In the early years there were a couple of times where I literally had no money and had to borrow from friends and family to eat.

What is absolutely wonderful now and I occasionally need to pinch myself is that I have created an amazing lifestyle for myself where I get to help all manner of people to empower and take more charge of their life. Take more charge of their emotions and more fully do more of what they want or don’t want to do. This is my calling or purpose in life and I get paid and make a good living doing this valuable work.

If you are reading this far then it is fair to assume that you have some interest in NLP. And you should know there are no guarantees that doing an NLP Practitioner training will give you the freedom and lifestyle you want.

Those kind of massive personal transformations require hard work, practise and time. What you will get through an NLP training are the processes that can and most likely will help you make the right kind of changes that support your personal evolution and help you to have a much more enjoyable life connecting more deeply with the right people and nurturing positive relationships.

What You Need To Know About The Kinds Of NLP Trainings Available

ONLINE CERTIFICATION

When there are no other alternatives this can be the only solution. I think about NLP Practitioner ‘online certification’ as the last resort. The whole and necessary human interaction is missing and it is essential in developing the required feedback loop you only get with real people on a live training.

BOOKS

Did you know that around 80% of self help book and that includes the copious NLP self help books are bough and never read? Of those who do a little reading many don’t do the all important exercises as you will discover NLP application is not a theoretical subject.

And for sure even with live trainings you really won’t be able to master all of your emotions and you certainly won’t be able to cure anyones phobia in minutes. That is the proverbal rubbish that you shouldn’t believe because its right up there with the ‘Earn a 7 figure sum coaching’ or ‘Write a best seller in a week’ nonsense that gets bandied around.

Books can help as a companion to actual live training. Assuming you know how to drive or swim how do you feel about a ‘learn to swim book’ ?

NLP Psychotherapy Counselling and Hypnotherapy

NLP as a therapeutic tool deals with and helps people to alter their emotional states and emotional responses to their problems. Why is this psychotherapy?

People who have fears, phobias, anxieties and the kinds of problems that are made manifest through their current thought processes are real and problematic feelings that are to a ‘real’ extent not actually caused by their immediate environment or actual real word situation.

These problems are generally caused by memories, thoughts and an over-active imagination.

Hypnotherapy Gateshead

To offer a diagnostic label, mostly unhelpful, yet pertinent to this post, this is known as neurosis or less commonly psychoneurosis.

The solutions that NLP therapy ( NLP Techniques used in a therapeutic or Coaching way ) offers help to people to change their perceptions and emotional states. This means changing how they think and can often offer a deep and meaningful rearrangement of life and word views.

The classes of problems an NLP Therapist will help you with would commonly be termed psycho neurosis. Anyone who is offering help and assistance in these circumstances is affectively offering psychotherapy. There are usually no accompanying claims to being a certified psychotherapist as these are two totally different things.

A hypnotherapist – that is, a psychotherapist who uses hypnosis” – William Baldwin Ph.D.

Psychotherapy and NLP

Anyone attending counselling, coaching or psychological therapy from a trained professional is receiving psychotherapy. Psycho in meaning psychological intervention and or coaching and therapy in terms of offering positive help. It is important to make this distinction because it is very easy to be confused by well meaning people.

The following exert is from a UK ‘Therapist’ web site.

Recently, I heard a local training provider (who incidentally is top of google in my region and does a lot of trainings) label it as ‘common psycho-therapeutic practice’ which is absurd. Dangerous in fact to label it as such, especially if you are not a psychotherapist, I know I am certainly not, nor he.”

Psychotherapy and being a psychotherapist can be confusing terms. It is easy for anyone who is not familiar or relatively inexperienced to fail to make these distinctions. So here is the definitive WIKI 😉

Psychotherapy Definition – Wiki

Psychotherapy is a general term referring to therapeutic interaction or treatment contracted between a trained professional and a client, patient, family, couple, or group. The problems addressed are psychological in nature and can vary in terms of their causes, influences, triggers, and potential resolutions.

Accurate assessment of these and other variables is dependent on the practitioner’s capability and can change or evolve as the practitioner acquires greater experience, knowledge, and insight.”

NLP as most people understand are the techniques and tools offered on most NLP Practitioner training courses, they are not the skills and tools that are used to collect the ways and means of experts. They are however the popularised tools and techniques that vast majority of people attending an NLP Practitioner walk away with following an NLP Practitioner training course.

Paul McKenna has made a great impact in personal development world by way of amongst hypnotherapy, NLP, EFT, ”Havening, spinning feeling – these are all the bog standard NLP techniques. None having been modelled in the true sense of NLP. They are simply some of the Techniques, Tools and processes of the NLP Practitioner or NLP Therapist.

NLP Practitioner Edinburgh and Newcastle 2014

An NLP Practitioner training course is one of many ways to help people improve their life. This has everything to do with our psychology and perception of how much influence we have in given situations.

Avoiding the absurd and ridiculous claims of NLP practitioners being able to master any emotional state, being able to cure phobias in minutes and never feeling stress again, this course aims to offer the tools and techniques to have a much more fun and engaging life. Starting with you.

I joined the NLP practitioner course as a way to extend my therapy skills to help others make changes in their lives. It gave me all the additional skills I wanted and more. I feel I am a much better therapist, helping people create their own meaningful solutions much more quickly.”

NLP Practitioner training in Newcastle offers much more than ‘soft skills’ in terms of being more able to manage ( not control ) our personal psychology and perspectives in life. This offers principles, the techniques and ways of genuinely, changing our psychological make up, to enhance and live life in deeper ways.

It also was one of the most fun and important 6 months of my life. Nigel’s teaching is fascinating, extremely well explained and absolutely hilarious. I spent the training weekends laughing, enjoying myself immensely and learning a huge amount.

Of course this requires application and practice. There are lots of techniques and tools to make communication more relevant and honest, there is a real accent on having fun during learning because the old classroom style is dead and the way forward is to incorporate joy in learning and making that learning totally practical in day to day living well.

In all the sessions you use the techniques on yourself to achieve your goals and solve your problems. NLP is able to be used as a secret therapy so you do not have to share any personal information with your colleagues, meaning you feel secure to change those things that are most personal to you. My perspective of the world has opened hugely and enabled me to make changes on a very deep level.

Pauline Thomas – Occupational Therapist, Yoga Teacher and now NLP Practitioner

My personal take on NLP is that it can, often in powerful ways, help individuals to change HOW we perceive and think about goals and problems in life. NLP Techniques offer a way to better realise your goals and outcomes. Unlike the Secret, this actually takes work and effort. This training is experiential by nature.

The Accent on NLP Course Training

Most of peoples stresses and frustrations come from the interpretation and psychology of our situations. Mostly none of the life stressors actually arise from physical situations. NLP offers well proven and time based techniques that can help you sort your self out … and … create some really positive change.

The NLP techniques create and shape new and additional ways of perceiving life. This is ideally suited to anyone who wants to expand their capabilities as a change worker, coach or professional service provider.

These trainings are for people who want or need to change how you think and act in the world. The accent is fundamentally on you being able to better act and respond in a world of rapidly changing themes.

The changes you want to realise will fundamentally begin with you.”

NLP Practitioner Training in the North East

Neuro Linguistic Programming is a way to use language and behavioural change to better connect with people, including yourself, to create and foster the kinds of life experiences you want more of.

It is not a fad ( been around since 1980’s ) or magic bullet that promises riches and a shimmering life. It is a very practical and robust way of YOU changing YOU so YOU can get more of the life you want. The accent is on doing.

NLP Practitioner Newcastle

NLP is in common terms about understanding how you can change your attitudes, the way you communicate and your perspectives because real and generative change begins with you. The way you interpret the world, people, situations and even yourself dramatically affects how you feel. How you feel affects what and how you go about living.

In Newcastle a brief Google search will reveal around four well established NLP training providers in Newcastle and the North East. The prices for NLP Practitioner training are ( August 2013 ) as follows:

Still Point Solutions : 11 days @ £1480.0 [ unsure of time frame ]

Jay Arnot The NLP Coach : 12 days @ 1299 ( advertised as £299 – but this is the deposit ) over 3 months

Matt Hudson : 7 days @ 1299 : 991 [ 7 days straight ]

NLP North East : 20 days @ £850 [ one weekend a month over 10 months ]

Communicating Excellence : 18 days @ £695 [ 6 months ] or 9 days @ £595 [ 3 weeks ]

Not all, but at least one of these trainings are advertising deliverables that are absolutely ridiculous and unfounded in common psycho therapeutic practice. So you should check out each provider before committing to any training.

Make sure what is on offer is right for you because trainers, me included, have very different styles. Talk to your potential training provider and be alert for the hard sell and ridiculous promises. Have a conversation and notice afterwards how you actually feel about the training and the training provider. This is very important.

Each and all of these providers including Communicating Excellence offer an NLP Practitioner Training.

What you should be interested in is how these trainings work and more than anything the personality and experience of your chosen trainer.

To get a sense of how Communicating Excellence NLP Practitioner trainings are, please look into my YouTube channel.

The next Communicating Excellence NLP Practitioner Training is January 2014 : Details here : and for much more information on how putting in to practice NLP can help you change your situations and life read this.

NLP for better relationships

One of the most important aspects you will find out about on an NLP Practitioner training is that EVERYBODY lives in their own MODEL OF THE WORLD. This is a kind of psycho-cultural jargon that really needs to be explained and exemplified. a key stone in sponsoring better and improved relationships and all the fruits this can offer.

Specifically the improved relationships you want with your children, your partner and you peers and possibly even yourself.

I have recently worked with a very bright and transforming young person who is very much in the process of orientating and integrating their own ideas, beliefs and rationalisation in the mist of a very messy divorce between their parents.

NLP Better Relationships

I think very sadly, as reported, said person, is receiving contradictory messages, matter of facts and damming accounts that are funnelled in a kind or Either Or way.

No child should be required to endure this kind of push me, pull you in this context. Thing is they are, so, how can this be transformed into something much more constructive and generative?

To take a step back, briefly, before going forward, another way to attempt to get this idea across was made very famous by Lord Alfred Korzybski in his works related to language and how it conveys, or tries to, relate language to experience and the meanings people make from experience. OK here we are again. What Alfy said was “The Map Is Not The Territory.” And everybody has their own individual and to some very large extent culturally shared maps.

Our Culture – Our Rules – Your Indoctrination

A very recent BBC ‘news’ item delivering information about the current situation in Syria came to mind.

This can be interpreted or made sense of like this. Our words, our memories our beliefs and internal mental maps, cultural and individual, that are quite literally constructed or made up so that we can in some way make sense of our experience in our immediate environment.

I have done my best, in metaphor and direct examples, to sponsor the idea that all people have their own motivations, their own beliefs and that both, for that person is valid and their reality. I have also explored Syria in context with Northern Ireland and how children can be indoctrinated to an either / or culture. They were already ahead of the game because they were already using the clause ‘yes but in some situations …’

Our brains or more accurately our whole nervous system is geared up to abstract or assimilate the cultural norms of our society. It is very easy to look upon what is happening in Syria with disdain or contempt for a pretty disgusting use of sentient beings by sentient beings. But, look into the past ( less than 100 years ) of the racial hatred between factions of people in Northern Ireland.

One persons terrorist is another persons freedom fighter and both while probably having similar ethnocentric values and beliefs have radically different values and beliefs when projected on warring factions.

Managing Emotions And Exploring Your Values

Jean Piaget, a famous developmental psychologists research states people mature through four stages of emotional, cultural and necessarily behavioural development. These are known as Sensory Motor ( 0-2 ), Pre Operational ( 2-7), Concrete Operational ( 7-11 ) and Formal Operational ( 11 to adult ). What this means is through a natural series of normal evolutions we all go from ego centric to ethno centric to free thinking adults.

At the stage of Concrete Operational, young children learn that their view or perspective is not the only one. This stage involves taking on the perspectives of other people. At the Formal operational level, young adults begin to be able to think about thinking and it is at this stage, become aware that they can introspect about cultural, familial and ethnocentric beliefs.

One of the touching poems about this is by Thich Nhat Hanh, Please Call Me By My True Names

Managing Better Relationships

Having discovered that one perspective will not and can not fit all, we are able to take another’s perspective. We are in the privileged position to be able to, through imagination, knowledge of culture and identification of other peoples values and beliefs ( which as as concrete or flimsy as our own ) to momentarily play at being someone else; taking on their beliefs, values, concerns and righteous ( as ours ) behaviour. By being many-perspectival we can do compassion. This does NOT mean all views or perspectives are equal, it means we can more better appreciate and respect where someone, anyone is coming from.

This very deep and very human understanding, or compassion, can be sponsored with a variety of NLP techniques such as ‘Perceptual Positions, Dilts’ Meta Mirror, Metaphors or stories that create the vicarious experiences of often very deep and realisations that help us grow as generatively as human beings.

Managing and Preserving Relationships

This requires a next step which is both less and more easy. This is about discovering the purpose or intention that drove another person ( or you ) to act in a certain way. Perhaps a topic for another post. Simple to sya this is ALL about understanding that motivations and drives are expressed in various forms. When the forms don’t seemingly match we are into the space of negotiation. Thank you for reading.
