Dealing with Guilt : A Gestalt Approach

I can understand how the NLP Meta Model was coined from reading Fritz Pearls Gestalt Therapy Verbatim and how Uncle Fritz way of coaxing people to be in the present and his insistence in process and the Here and Now is a priority in Gestalt. This has roots in Zen, Spirituality and where possible the abandonment of Maya or the thought induced coma-vale which separates people from direct experience.

This is a post sharing Fritz’ method in dealing with Guilt and resolving it and completing a Gestalt. I am sure this really won’t work for everyone as you yourself have to define, or at least work out what Guilt means to you. Guilt is just a word which can have many meanings. Though I am quite sure that certain emotional affects including Guilt can be very satisfactorily dealt with using this method.

In reference to what Guilt is for you, I want to draw your attention to those almost lovable pictures people put on social media of their dogs who have without their owners presence eat the sofa or a bag of Winalott. They acted out of their nature and only afterwards felt the dogma or ideology of an owner. Bad dog.

This is what many, who I can regard as enlightened and specifically Nietzsche and Krishnamurti, will say there is not good or evil, there is just choicelessness when you act from and out of your spontaneity. With that said, lets deal with Guilt resolution by way of Gestalt and Fritz.

I want to preface this process for resolving Guilt by way of a short usage of the Hindu five cosha’s ( sheathes ) that construct reality. This is all to do with duality, complementary and the integration and acceptance of opposites.

Joseph Campbell discusses the cosha’s as follows:

  1. Food sheath, basically the organic body.
  2. Breath sheath, life force and cooks the food we eat.
  3. Mind sheath, all the mental stuff, good and bad.
  4. Wisdom body, very deep intelligence, cells etc.
  5. Bliss body. Atman.

There is a big, large, disconnect between the mental sheath of judging and making a specific meaning and the wisdom body, that aspect that brought you into being. The wisdom body holds all opposites, all at once but the mental sheath deals with pairs of opposites, good-bad, right-wrong and friend or foe, that kind of stuff.

Now, getting back to Gestalt and working through Guilt. Pearls says that Guilt in terms of Gestalt is actually about Resentment.  Again, remember for me this does not have to be about Guilt, this can be abut anger, hostility, loss and … well put in your own, you defined emotion. Rules, yours and others and the seeming transgressions.

Gestalt Guilt Resolution

OK, So according to Fritz, Guilt is about resentment. Find your guilt and find out who you are resenting and for what.

In this exploration ( stay with it ) and resentment is about your demands or you could say rules that are imposed. Find the demands that you were tacitly, and now consciously making.

Once you have these, there may be many, the idea now is to state them in the imperative and that means the command! In Gestalt this is taking to the empty chair, where you imagine that other half of an argument is there, right in from of you in the here and now.

This will be something like, “Stop, Do it, Talk to me, Put it there” – Imperative / Command.

Now this next step is what really does it for me in a good way. The sublimation or integration of the pairs of opposites.  Return to the resentments and Appreciate those very same bits and bod. Yes, appreciate them fully and completely. And go even more forward and tell that imagined person ( you ) what else you appreciate about them.

This may or may not be covered in the March 2019 NLP Master Practitioner training in Newcastle. There are linguistic refinements to be added and the language really has nothing to much to interfere with this awesome process of completing a gestalt so you can let go of the past and move more fully into the present.

  1. Acknowledge Guilt and Define it.
  2. Turn guilt into resentments.
  3. State your rules and demands.
  4. Express your demands as commands!
  5. Switch to Appreciation.
  6. Acknowledge more appreciations.

This, as a process, helps to move you more towards the wisdom body as mentioned in the five sheaths earlier. Moving away from the duality of thinking and towards a deeper wisdom that is your birth-right.  Perhaps even towards bliss. But one step at a time. Or not!

How To Create a Positive Compulsion : NLP Fast Phobia in Reverse

The NLP Fast Phobia Cure, Double Dissociation or the Rewind Process in it’s many names can be a fantastic, simple and surprisingly effective way to dissolve the traumatic memory associations that disable people living and experiencing life in wholesome ways.

If you have experienced trauma, in any of the forms and ways that are now thought to be dysfunct, that is a scenario when your life was in danger and to the more non-psychological an human stuff of a serious unresolved problem.

Positive Compulsion - Reverse Fast Phobia Cure

My thoughts are this, and if you wish to effortfully explore, you may find ways to really do more of the kind of things, from decision making, behaviours or being more of who you want to be; in aligning your conscious perceptions to what you actually do; Again it is effortful.

This process is almost ( there is a slight difference ) like running the NLP Fast Phobia Cure in reverse.

Procedural Steps : Creating a Positive Compulsion

1. TEST: Imagine a future scenario that you want to do different than before. Do this and then rate on any scale [ 0-10 or percentage ] your honest response to this being a reality. If this is less than 80% this process could make a difference for you and more importantly all the people with whom you interact.

2. OK so IF step one is less than 80% for you. In this case do the following: And it will be effortful. Run the entire scenario, and I am suggesting less than two minutes of the crucial decision point ( which is the start of behavior ) from end to start, that is in REVERSE in full colour, looking out your own eyes.

3. Now, in Black and White or Monotone, SEE YOURSELF from start to finish, like the whole thing was videoed, watching yourself do exactly what you want to do, with all respect for others involved. So it is almost exactly, very, like you want it to go. Consider this step the ‘Director of a movie’.

4. Now, as the ‘Producer of the movie’, Review the Director’s ( Step 3 ) version of events. Again in Black and White, or monotone. Watch the Director’s version of events and IF this can be Improved, with your creative input THEN return to step 3 and run step three again. Returning to Step four, this step until you as Producer are satisfied.

5. TEST. Imagine the complete scenario, just like step one. If there is over 80% satisfaction, honestly and truthfully in your own imagination. You are done. Only thing left is reality testing. IF not THEN return to step two.

Lots of thanks to the people who firmed up the roles and definitions for this process during the 2018 October Practice day.

Please feel free to use, distribute and even more importantly refine this process.

October Newcastle NLP and Hypnotherapy Practice Day

Some topics will be chosen on the day and some aspects of change to practice are described below. This is a high value low cost day only £20. Practice really doesn’t make perfect but practice leads to less error and more understanding.

NLP Hypnotherapy Practice Newcastle

NLP Fast Phobia Cure

One of the many techniques in NLP that offer the possibility of depotentiating troublesome or traumatic memories using a sub modality intervention and re-meaning the past so those old troubles become resources in the present and future.

Working With Unhelpful Inner Voices

Troublesome inner voices could be the kind that fuel anxiety to the kind that hold you back. The crux being an inner voice that is limiting your options in a negative way.

Thought Provoking Philosophising

We will be exploring more of the work and methods of Phil Jeremiah IV as a way to use humour, irrelevance and applied neuro-psychology to, as research shows, re wire old problems.

Nominalisations in Hypnotic Language and NLP

This post is about how to use nominalisations in hypnotic language to be more effective in hypnotic language. So as a nice easy suggestion, for now forget about the names and labels and shift your concentration to the functional use.

The invitation inviting you to a quantity of relaxation into the subject matter

Nominalisations, reifications or plane old abstract-nouns ( term I have learned lately ) are a set of words that name what happened to some verbs, adjectives and other linguistic jargon as a process of ‘objectification’, ‘solidifying’ and in some cases conflating human qualities to something that just aint so.

The cessation of thought to the practicalities in the present

We are all familiar with objects and amounts in the real world. An object like a chair, a book or a kettle. Also familiar we are with amounts of substances like some water, some coffee or half a tonne of top soil.

The encouragement and realisation of knowledge already

Easily identifiable as the tangible, something that can be touched, counted or measured in the physical world. Once language takes the astounding leap into the realms of the non-physical, such as emotions, abstractions and the arts something else is happening. True art arrests the consciousness as Stephen Dedalus puts it in Portrait of an Artist as a Young Man.

Adjusting adjustment … maintenance of an attitude of exploration

So, simply and I hope easily understood, a nominalisation is metaphorically freezing, solidifying and capturing a process, event or name and as such offering a wider and broader interpretation to the reader with little specific detail from the speaker or writer.

Using Nominalisations in Hypnotic Language

Two short paragraphs, lets call them basic inductions are presented below. The second one is an italicised and nominalised version of the first.

I would like to invite you to relax into trance … notice what you are experiencing presently … and as your thoughts and feelings drift … shift … changing state … opening …

Here/Hear … the invitation of relaxation into hypnosis … identification with the experience of the moment … as the thoughts and the sensations of new transformation … shift a consciousness … awakenment …

So, having some idea of what you are wanting to say / suggest and using you extensive vocabulary as well the simple tool for nominalising ( think work endings ) you are on your way.

You will also discover some additional millage when you use the words:

  • The, A, An
  • Some, more, less
  • Of, with, from

When describing nominalised ‘objects’, ‘quantities’ and ‘qualities’ respectively.

A development of some complexity with the realisation of delight

Recognizing Nominalisations in Hypnotic Language

There are craws of words have have endings in a specific type which will give you thousands of nominalised words. They are easy to find. Just do a google search for words ending with “X”. Here are some examples of that variable X.

  • ion ( retention, fascination and expectation )
  • ship ( relationship, scholarship and friendship )
  • ment ( empowerment, enactment and encouragement )
  • ness ( happiness, hopefulness and clearness )
  • ity ( fluidity, perceptibly, reciprocity )
  • nce ( influence, congruence, intelligence )
  • ology
  • osity

A very useful way ( Structure of Magic Volume 1 ) to recognise nominalisation is a two fold test. One part is linguistic the other is a metaphor abstraction test. In SMV1 we are actively de-nominalising words. Remember in hypnosis we are actively nominalising words.

Does the following make sense?

  • A continuing “nominalisation”
  • Can you put some “nominalisation” in a container? That is does “nominalisation” feel like an object or quantity? But it’s not.

A continuing presentation, an continuing happiness, an continuing excitement. And you can’t put presentation, happiness or excitement in a container.

Practicing Nominalisations in Hypnotic Language

The most useful ways I have found to put this all together functionally for me is joyful and effortful practice. This is simplicity itself. Here are a collection of suggestions that may be of great utility to you in the development of contextual application of your own selection.

  • Use google to search for lists of words ending with “x” as in the section on Recognizing Nominalisations in Hypnotic Language. Look at them and write large swathes of them out. Preferable in sentences of mostly connecting words.
  • Read a poem, book or listen to you favorite music. Notice the abundant use of nominalisations and notice their effect on you! With the realisation the nominalisations are nothing new and you have an understanding already … consider the development of curiosity as to how your application can experience a new and different functionality.
  • Practice in the spoken work. Record what you do and listen back to this. It will naturally not be usual in the beginning. Practice with your  friends, clients and those direct phone sales people who are no doubt trying it on with you. The kindness of practice and the practice of kindness.

Thought Provoking Philosophising Training Newcastle : October 2018

Thought Provoking Philosophising Training Newcastle with Phil Jeremiah IV. You will experience the Percussion, Concussion and Discussion model of how specifically to arrange the context for provocative change.

There are many variants of using humour and irrelevance in change work and there are two unique aspects to taking on and incorporating in your work with a Provocative Coaching Training Newcastle. Firstly there is the Phil factor which having trained with him you will know. Phil is teaching you to own the patterns and apply them as yourself, in your own unique style.

Secondly, an aspect that is missing from many if not most training’s in the provocative method is how to set up and frame what is going to happen to your clients, be this in therapy or coaching. This essential framing allows and facilitates the essence of being provocative. This is called in the inner circle ‘The Bubble of Possibility’.

The Bubble of Possibility – A Humourful Provocative Space for Change

This is the well defined ‘safe space’ of absolute inclusion where nothing is out of bounds and just about anything goes in light of helping a client get unstuck using an array of patterns which are shared in great detail during the training weekend.

A bubble session can be thought of as a kind of brain spa treatment session where your entire body has the potential to be drenched in laughter, confusion and new meanings, solutions and experiences that can completely re-write the old story of what was once a real problem.

Thought Provoking Philosophising Training Newcastle October 2018

Taking this unique training with Phil Jeremiah IV is highly practical and you will get to experience, by demonstration, how to apply the serious use of humour in therapy and coaching. There is a course manual detailing the many varied patterns utilised within a session.

Throughout the two days unique training you will get to see, first hand ( it may be you ) a selection of real change work and therapy sessions. Sessions are 20 minutes in duration, framed within The Bubble of Possibility, Percussion, Concussion and Discussion model.

Discussion being so important it will get a mention here. When genuine and meaningful discussion becomes apparent, this is where tenderness and honest communication becomes vital; this is the beginnings of re-writing a story of love and integrity take shape.  And it is the client who is the author of their change.

Newcastle NLP Practice Group : Saturday June 9th 2018

Newcastle NLP and Hypnotherapy practice group for a monthly practice day on Saturday. This coming June, Saturday 9th for a day of NLP and Hypnotherapy practice. Some prearranged topics and others will be decided on the day.

Following on from an engaging conversation about allergies, potential room hire and current favorite author; several topics for exploration have emerged. A few are as follows: Grace and gracefulness, how to see difference in the same way and useful reductionism.

Newcastle NLP Practice Group

Grace and Gracefulness

The eyes go forth to seek out a recommendation for the heart …” – Giraut de Bornelh

Trying to be or act with grace is a sure fire way to attain the opposite, whatever that may be. We can and do recognise Grace in others and I suggest that is how, without self reflection we know it.

I would like to explore what ‘we’ mean by grace, a state of grace and gracefulness as a way of both unfolding meaning and perhaps as way of feedback and even concocting some process to wake this up more in each of us.

What I suggest as an outset, is grace can have zero, sum and total thought as well as the observable behaviours others can notice. Seemingly connected to congruence, skills in a field and belief, it will be worth contrasting this with some of the politicians we love to dislike.

How to See Difference in the Same Way

But soft! What light through yonder window breaks? It is the east, and Juliet is the sun.” Romeo & Juliet

Conceptual blending is a term I can across in reading ‘Imagine’ one of the exceptional offerings from Jonah Lehrer. The idea is that seemingly intractable problems are solved ( or created ) when different fields of knowledge are blended.

I hade 20 minutes just sitting, watching, listening, feeling the river ( see above picture ). Noticing the different sounds, smells and sensations as I moved a little distance. I was thinking about quantum physics and chaos theory. Hobbies of mine. This is metaphorical conceptual blending.

Walking back home, I saw a group of Rambellers, rambelling. Out of a field, the came, like a flow, like a river. Discordant voices that as I approached ( remember the average age of a Rambler is over 90 ), became coherent, and as I passed the group, perhaps 30, their voices died down, like the past memories of before at the river.

Useful Reductionism

So, I mentioned my current fav. author. Well at the moment it reading Skin In the Game by Nassim Nicholas Taleb. One of the layered ideas in this gem of a book is the idea of reductionism. That is making things simpler by subtraction.

Another different way to think of this is the mantra ‘neti neti’; Not this, not this as a way of reducing suffering in a cold climate. In terms of our every growing desire to read more self help books, find happiness and abstract themes like love and peace, what can we stop doing?

NLP Submodalities in action – Making change stick

NLP Submodalities. One of our natural and normal instincts is to move towards the kinds of experiences, habits and beliefs we like, which are good and beneficial and our other natural response is to move away for the kinds of experiences, habits and beliefs we don’t like, which are bad and not salubrious.

This should make immediate sense. The simplest of cells, of which we are largely composed of, demonstrate sentience. Sentience is like intelligence as commonly defined. Plants mostly turn towards the sun, showing heliotropism. Little monkeys,  deprived of their mother, show a preference for a furry warm counterpart and not a cold milk feeder, as Harry Harlow demonstrated.

NLP Submodalities

One of the many evidential stories in the excellent ‘Before You Know It’ – book by John Bargh describes how addicts with about an hour of training each day for two weeks, make statistically significant, long term change.

These people, all volunteers, were given a task of identifying photographs as either vertical or horizontal in nature and on recognition would either push or pull a lever. What was not identified to them consciously is that the photographs with their addictive substance would always be paired with a photograph that was to be pushed.

This was intended and indeed did increase the unconscious avoidance  mechanisms in people with respect to their addictive drug. This by no means was any sort of perfect cure yet was very significant in lowering relapse rates.

In this study, Reinout Wiers and his team helped people change their unconscious attitudes towards an addictive behaviour by pairing or anchoring the human ( and cell like ) avoidance behaviour, push away to their addiction, or at least a picture of it.

NLP Submodalities are classically the manipulation or changing of the smaller lego bricks of our representations of five senses. Or six senses in you include a sense of humour. For instance in the visual field, the submodalities include colour, distance, luminosity and visual-spatial location.

So as science, once again, seems to offer great validity to NLP techniques, in this instance a NLP Submodalities intervention, which NLPistas will recognise also includes a Meta Program, move away, move towards. You should also note the move away, move towards preference is as old as the hills and did not originate with NLP. And Meta Programs are not separate from Submodalities!

What, to me, is of greatest significance is this intervention was repeated hundreds if not thousands of times. This is where critics of such an NLP Submodalities intervention may say it didn’t work. More accurately the operator and the recipient didn’t work enough.

Repetition is critical to move any conscious skill into the unconscious arena. Repetition is the key to making this kind of intervention work and stick.

NLP Submodality Intervention – Making it Stick!

Firstly make a commitment to yourself to apply the time each day for a week or two to repetitively do the following exercise as described. I suggest doing this for twenty minutes a day.

  1. Make a mental image of the habit you want to stop. Close your eyes.
  2. Make and feel disgust. You know the face. Wrinkled nose.
  3. Physically push away the image of the habit you are going to stop. In your imaginations as you physically push away the image, see the image going off into the distance.
  4. Open your eyes. Smile, count to five and repeat steps 1-4.

NLP and Hypnotherapy Practice Day : Newcastle : April 14th

As spring comes the Snowdrops wane and Daffodils and Crocus’ are pushing their way up, waxing out into the changing seasons, so too comes the beginning of a monthly NLP and Hypnotherapy Practice Day. Excellent value at just £20!

NLP and Hypnotherapy Practice Day April 2018

The rhizome or roots of a plant are the life source that again and again provides the nucleus of the flower, the deep structure that provides a blue print for life. Coming to a NLP and Hypnotherapy Practice Day is like nurturing your NLP and Hypnotherapy rhizome because we all know practice leads to less error!

This NLP and Hypnotherapy Practice day will be organised around practising key NLP structures like Rapport, Calibration and Flexibility with some prearranged topics as well as you deciding what you would like to practice on the day. Fast Phobia Cure, Submodalities or Meta Model – you choose!

NLP and Hypnotherapy Practice Day Topics

Three predefined topics for this NLP and Hypnotherapy Practice day are: One questioning our beliefs as maps of the world to open new possibilities. Two being present without internal chatter to actually learn something and Three some Provocative Humour Worx patterns.

One : In relation to deep roots or the nurturant rhizome, something I find useful for myself and for clients is questioning beliefs and reasons. A delightful, fun and curious way to do this is with ‘The Why?’ exercise. This is something recently developed with my friend Ruth Olayinka for an improvisation course we are planning.

In deeply questioning our words ( as maps of our beliefs ), essentially challenging our justifications and rationales, our reasoning and logic, we can metaphorically return to our deep roots to temp a new flower of being into existence. And note worthy is ‘Why’ can act as either cause or effect, back or forward in time.

Two : I find it very useful when talking with other people to be fully present. This for me has a key ingredient which is having no internal chatter. Usually with no agenda other than to serve. Serving can include but is not limited to listening, reflecting and questioning.

You could call this an NLP model of behavior in time in four quadrants. Attending to your attention as in mindfulness comes close to this idea and there is much more and much less so less is more!

Three : We will be utilising some of Phil Jeremiah’s Humour Worx Provocative patterns to explore problems, stuck states and just for fun in learning.

Most professional societies require that regular practice, training and support form part of the CPD you choose to do. These practice days can make up part of your CPD.

Parts Sublimation in Hypnosis : Clinical Hypnotherapy Diploma Newcastle

This is a demonstration of a really exceptional process I learned on a training I did with Stephen Gilligan many years ago. What I am doing is a slightly reduced version and stays true to the idea of parts sublimation in hypnosis. One of the five change processes that are demonstrated with Clinical Hypnotherapy Diploma Newcastle.

For me there is a subtle difference between parts integration and parts sublimation. I will explain this in a while. The purpose of this process is, like many in the world of change working is to resolve conflict. Specifically internal conflicts on both the behavioural and psychological level.

Here is the recording of the process from the 2017 Clinical Hypnotherapy Diploma Newcastle upon Tyne.

First, for your client, identify something you want to do but instead do something else. This could be thinking, behaviour emotion; This is one definition of unaligned thought and behaviour. Like Hegel’s thesis and anti-thesis. Also a good definition of automatic, unconscious behaviour which is causing some conscious consternation.

Part One : Parts Sublimation : Clinical Hypnotherapy Diploma Newcastle

For this change process this is the idea for change. A pretty typical description of what is happening. Here are some common examples so you get the flavor of this.

  • I want to lose weight, but instead I end up eating a packet of crisps.
  • I want to study, but instead I go out partying.
  • I want to do X but instead I do Y

I want to do X but instead I do Y. This will seem familiar if you are human. Quite often the more conscious disdain for a behaviour or a way of being is often overshadowed by an automatic or unconscious way of being.

Part Two : Parts Sublimation : Clinical Hypnotherapy Diploma Newcastle

Elicit at least three stories that have personal significance and meaning. Take your time with this and make sure you have both a verbal and kinesthetic / affective / emotional representation of this from your client. In this process all of a person, place and thing will be useful.

It’s important to really absorb this yourself as a facilitator. Notice the time that is used wisely in eliciting these three stories and also note the way I am recording this in my own neurology. Way beyond paraphrasing or reflective counseling.

I am re-telling the stories as if they are my experiences as much as possible and checking that I have got this good enough to connect at a level that resonates.

Part Three : Parts Sublimation : Clinical Hypnotherapy Diploma Newcastle

A somatic representation of X and Y. Two distinct physical representation of each state. Where your client can SLOWLY move between while you utilise those three stories as part of a trance exploration.

At this Clinical Hypnotherapy Diploma Newcastle, I work with Ruth, ensuring that both states, what is wanted and what is not wanted is both appreciated and valued for what it is. The hypnotherapy is utilising both the information and meaning from her stories of personal meaning.

The moving slowly is a conscious involvement in the ongoing change process, avoiding the kind of sleeping trance as much as possible. And notice that there is no bias from me, as the facilitator, from speaking about ‘positives’ and ‘negatives’ with respect to a particular somatic/physical position.

The outcome, as the facilitator is a sublimation of both aspects. To transcend and include both parts. In such an evolution in creating a perspective the holds both parts and sees beyond both. Valuing each perspective and behaviour.
