Relationships Healing and Boundary’s. How to Heal.

This is a process for healing. Specifically healing a past relationship or encounter or meeting; that still, if you think about it has energy in the negative for you. In other words, it still hurts and you are still hurting. That hurt is a boundary.

Here is a formulaic way of letting all that go, so you can move on.

This is an admixture of body appreciation and wisdom. Incorporating ideas from Gestalt Therapy, Ken Wilber’s ‘No Boundary’ and a very deep sense of who you are, genuinely and acting from that center or gateless gate.

We begun at the TranceCafe The Newcastle NLP and Hypnotherapy Practice Group with a very simple exercise. Recount, tell your story about a very positive interaction with another person.

Following on from this we did a body scan. That is the well known and familiar re-direction of conscious attention into your body. The idea is to discover where and while you, as the scanner, feel positive and negative sensations. This can also be emotions though the accent is on sensations.

What we are attempting to do here is, from recalling a positive encounter with another person, what is happening, going on in your body. If you ever thought you were an island or other people don’t have an effect withing you – think again – or better … feel again. ‘Lose your mind and come to your senses’

Next we explored what kind of relationships we can have. Here is what was offered on the evening.

So you can see that Relationship, the word meaning comes in a lots of different and varied flavours. And that’s gona make a lots of sense. Specifically the ones you want to change inside and outside.

OK, here is the mostly main point. After sharing a positive interaction and doing a body scan. Do the almost opposite – after all that is what healing is about. Recall a negative, hurtful, harmful interaction with another person,

The way this is done is without sharing this with another person, Just remember, recall and relive this in your own reality-experience. Feel what you feel. I am assuming its not good, its not what you wanted, its what is still unresolved.

Once you have done that, excruciating as that may be, its done in the in the privacy of you. Once you have done that, do a body scan again and feel what is going on for you. And I mean really feel. Could be a surprise and this could be an announcement or an acknowledgement of your feelings. All of this is YOU-ANOTHER. Well kind of; Its Interdependence.

Having done all of that recollecting a negative interaction and noticed what you are feeling, it time to do some healing. Review that interaction and get precisely clear about your expectations. The kind of ethnomethodology of usually unspecified social interactions that show up by their lack pathos.

Getting precisely clear about your expectations that didn’t show up in that encounter, also get clear about the other half. What the person ( in your mind ) expected from you. Get clear about the emotion you feel now.

Directly express your emotion and expectations towards that other person. Yes, they are not there, but you can complete the Gestalt by having a real conversation with an imaginary person. Tell them directly what wasn’t there – your missing expectations and what you want, your expectations.

Finally, imagine being that other person and relate that mutual reality of listening and feeling those expectations and emotions. Come back to yourself and notice what you notice. What shifts in perceived boundary’s are there for you now?

March NLP and Hypnotherapy Newcastle Practice Day Sunday 17th is Excellent Value

If you have problems and no one, not even you can solve it, and if you can find one; maybe you can use the A-Team of solutions in a metaphorical representation. If you are hearing the tune of an America anti-hero series, so am I, its OK. Im OK, you’re OK.

This Newcastle NLP and Hypnotherapy Practice day will be exploring goals and outcomes using emerging and transforming metaphor; as well as any processes or explorations that are decided on the day.

NLP Hypnotherapy Practice Newcastle

One of my favorite books, which is an in-depth analysis of Metaphor is ‘Metaphors We Live By’ from Lakoff and Johnson. In a recent conversation this book was mentioned as a unsung source for so many advances not just in understanding metaphor but in using metaphor deliberately as a change tool.

An example in a further book by the same authors is what is up as a change tool for reaching a goal ( and that is moving out of stuck to journey towards that goal ) is a way of creating a metaphorical landscape that represents the journey with all of the obstacles and ‘issues’ that compose what is a real world problem.

The Source Path Goal Schema

If you imagine a metaphorical landscape and you ( or a vehicle or agent ) moving across or through or over the terrain towards your goal, starting from some known origin; You can create a metaphor as a representation to navigate.

Direct from the Philosophy in the Flesh ( 1999) this has the following articles:

  • A trajector that moves ( you for instance or a representation )
  • Starting point ( source location )
  • A Goal ( the intended destination of the trajector )
  • A route, from the source to the goal
  • The actual trajectory of motion ( a path )
  • The position of the trajector at a given time
  • The direction of the trajector at that time
  • The final destination ( which may not be the goal )

As you can see, this could be determined as a math equation of some object moving if such equations could be found. We are not math equations so moving to the representational field of metaphor can provide fresh insight and potentials for new movement within this metaphor field to be sure.

Additionally, again from PITF, some extensions or additions are: a vehicle ( or other representation ), the speed of motion, obstacles to motion, forces moving one along the trajectory, additional trajectors ( anthropomorphisations ) and so on. The idea being to create a metaphor ‘field’ representative of a journey or transformation towards some outcome.

Now this metaphor field, representing a journey towards a goal can be created consciously or equally this could be the contents of a dream or could be elicited from a coach. What is important is that once there is a such a field created it can be explored.

Gestalt and Jung in the Metaphor Field

In Gestalt work, you may be working on a dream with all of the dream elements, such as a hat, a hill or even a book can be given over to anthropomorphic exploration. No object or thing in a dream is inert. You can play that role as in identifying with a specific object in a dream. The idea in Gestalt is moving towards an integration of seemingly different parts.

So with this in mind, any element of your metaphor can be explored, identified with and potentially integrated into a greater whole.

Now as one structure for identifying with an aspect or object of the metaphor field representing a future goal we can use Jungs four functions of sensor, thinker, feeler and intuitor as a structured way of exploring the identification with a metaphor ( or dream ) object or aspect.

In addition to a metaphorical exploration of a goal or outcome there will be which ever topics or explorations are requested on the day. I look forward to seeing you there.

NLP Master Practitioner Training March 2019 Newcastle upon Tyne

NLP Master Practitioner training in Newcastle this coming March 2019. Take your NLP skills to the next extreme level. Highly practical and experiential ways to develop further your linguistic, physicalised NLP and make learning and absorbing new ways of being faster and much more accurate.

Modelling is a huge aspect of NLP. After all if the origin of NLP is to be believed it was modelling and it was unconscious modelling at that.

NLP Hypnotherapy Newcastle

My first NLP Master Practitioner as a student we were taught modelling as per Robert Dilts analytical modelling. Something like a 8 or 12 step ( I don’t remember as its not important to me ) frame work that collected how someone, that you want their skills in a particular context, does what they do.

It’s an exceptionally good theoretical process and does have some use in the world. It’s also anything other than easy when requesting verbal descriptions of what someone does while they are doing some unconscious skill.

My first conscious modelling expedition was with one on my best friends who is an exceptional story teller. This is the same person who had a full room of people listening to him in a house with three floors and three DJ’s playing their stuff to almost empty rooms.

Needless to say the inquiry, perhaps my lack of skills or perhaps verbal descriptions are are almost rubbish in capturing a demonstrable physicalised skill. This lead me to simply copy what my friend was doing. Much more effortful than asking a load of questions.

Many years later I trained with one of the co-creators of NLP and learned unconscious modelling. Which was with some real refinements what I had been doing.  Modelling is a core skill on this NLP Master Practitioner Training and you completing a modelling project will be part of the assessment process.

In addition to modelling there is also a great deal of learning, application and understanding Meta Programs and Patterns of Reformulation ( Sleigh of Mouth ) as well as an ongoing and continuous development of the principles and practice of NLP.

You can see a great deal more of the course content by clicking here and you can book and secure your place using the booking link below. Hope to meet you there for a transformative and nourishing journey.

Thought Provoking Philosophising : March 2019 Humour in Therapy and Coaching

Thought Provoking Philosophising with Phil Jeremiah IV is a exceptional workshop in March 2019 in Newcastle upon Tyne. Learn the structures of how to use humour in therapy and change work to help clients rewire their neurology, attitudes and identity for increased happiness and increased freedom.

When you are laughing pain doesn’t hurt

You will experience pain in our life and you know this as sure as you will take your next breath. Usually after sufficient time has passed you heal and in some ways limp on or with a full recovery go forward. Pain however is a universal constant that will always, in some form or another be around the corner.

Pain comes in a spectrum of flavours; ranging from the physical, psychological and emotional. Pain can also be perpetuated with thoughts, memories or the kind of circular thinking that gets you nowhere except further down into a mire of sadness and despair. And here we are talking about perpetuating habits.

Escaping from a habit is not always so easy when you try to do it on your own.  Habits are the hard wired aspects of your thinking and behaving this is about learning how through, humour, distraction and pattern interrupting to derail problematic old patterns and create proper choice.

So coming to this Thought Provoking Philosophising workshop as someone who wants to work with personal issues or learn the structures to be using humour as an intervention tool or both will be a very wise decision.

This training and encompassing drills are like a Brain Spar weekend to rejuvenate, refresh and invigorate your neurons into delicious new pathways while pruning off what was left of the winters passed.

Thought Provoking Philosophising is Safe and Effective

Explaining in advance the kind of art form and techniques you will gain from this workshop is important. There is no just starting to use humour and irrelevance to change problem behaviours or thinking without the correct methods and explanations in advance. This is The Bubble of Possibility.

The Bubble is a safe space where the art of Thought Provoking Philosophising takes place. You will learn all about this early on in the first morning. Then the days will evolve outwards with demonstrations and a great deal of practicing drills, which when brought together, lead to the art in practice.

Now, helping clients change is both the clients and therapists role. The therapist is an outside influence that will both recognise and then provoke you out of negative and self defeating patterns using humour, irrelevance and sincere compassion, creating new neural patterns and pathways away from pain and problems.

Attend this Thought Provoking Philosophising to learn an art that can help you and your clients move away from problem behaviours and habits into that river of life that moves us onwards into the living real life that is our human right.

Completing this workshop you will have :

  • The structures and patterns that come together to make an art form in chance work and therapy.
  • The ability to recognise and divert problem thinking and behaviour into new neural patterns of choice.
  • Expanded and enhanced your skills and methods to help your clients more; and yourself.
Disclaimer : Those who are about to laugh, we salute you. Humour in this sense, the sense of Thought Provoking Philosophising is not about telling jokes. This is about learning structures and patterns through drills and practice. To create a workable art form.

Motivating Fear to Desire : NLP Practitioner Training Newcastle

Just a little while ago, lets say only ten minutes, I was sitting next to the open fire, feeling warm and comfortable. Eating some delicious home made food and enjoying a second glass of wine. The television was on in the background, something I consciously selected to watch. I am at ease with the world and myself feeling relaxed and quite joyful. This is nice.

One of the books on my sofa, a very recent book on what is delightfully called neuro marketing is open about half way through. For me there is a great deal of applied NLP Practitioner or sales skills or persuasion skills. It’s kind of about, for me anyway, knowing the structures or tools and applying them in ways that fit some ethical way of being in the world. It’s not the tools, its how they are used and for what purpose.

NLP Practitioner Newcastle

Did you know that it is though in some ultra intelligent circles ( perhaps without much wisdom ) that human language evolved in order to control and influence other humans?

If you have read the first paragraph of this post and I assume you have, you have probably identified with some or all of my experience. Hopefully it was a pleasant experience for you too. Check this re-written version in a bit and notice what happens with you.

When my telly is on, I am either watching self selected DVD’s or self selected streamed stuff. There are absolutely no adverts. Adverts and advertising is all about, quite simply encouraging you to buy ‘something’ you probably don’t want or need. Not the same as you actively wanting to purchase something or is it?

A lot of years ago, I signed up to a course ( which didn’t run ) but ended up getting some little coaching with one of the hosts. Their sole process for ‘getting’ clients was to find out the clients ‘pain’ and offer a solution. That really makes sense in that people who use a service are attempting to make their life easier by alleviating pain. This was around 2008.

The neuro-marketing book I am reading, which is research based, with people who are hooked up to a brain wave monitor, ece and a even have tracking software monitoring their facial micro expressions extols that using fear ( pain in another language ) is an excellent way to grab unconscious attention. That is engage the emotional nervous system. This grabs attention at a other than conscious level. Basically creates fear ( read just about any newspaper ) and then goes on to offer your unique solution.

They then go on to suggest that if that ‘fear’ can be exaggerated, all the better for more emotional traction. Then what? Again, offer a solution. Your solution to their need, which you are of course, if you follow is being largely created by the marketer to grab your emotional response, basically an orchestrated hijack.

Re Written Opening Paragraph : Engage Emotional Brain

I was very worried just a little while ago, lets say only ten minutes, but I am so on edge I don’t know if this was five minutes or ten.

I was sitting next to the open fire, even though it was burning I felt cold, something was really worrying me. I had some food that I made but it was mostly uneaten, there was something about it that didn’t taste right. Even the glass of wine seemed bitter.

The television was in the background but there was yet another news story about an act of terror or violence, that’s all that seems to be in the news these days.

I feel uneasy at the moment.

I bet ( and this is just an example ) this is a very different experience to reading the first paragraph. So please, read the first paragraph again 🙂 and come back to what follows; noticing your own, even slight, emotional response. Thank you.

Sometimes I am absolutely astounded by the obvious. Why on earth do ‘we’ need to have research based ‘evidence’ to tell us the screamingly obvious. Fear and Desire were the two first challenges of Shakyamuni Buddha in his quest for release or enlightenment from a world of suffering. This was more than five hundred years B.C. This kind of advertising creates both fear and desire. Now you know consciously what you have know all along.

If you require ‘psychological’ statistical evidence ( as oppose to knowing your own direct experience ) read that wonderful book Thinking Fast and Thinking Slow by Daniel Kahneman. Specifically the chapters on Prospect Theory and Bad Events. Basically as human ‘statistical’ beings, we are predisposed to avoid loss more that we seek gain; Loss hurts us more than gain psychologically ( and physically – these are not separable really ) and after a time any loss or gain psychologically diminishes in both value and importance to us. Thought it is still there; as a memory; physically and psychologically. That is in essence a trauma or a rapture.

In other words, we seek the stuff that makes us happy; when it arrives happiness diminishes and we seek more. We avoid pain and continue to want to avoid pain.

Last week I was presenting an introduction to hypnotherapy for some students at a college in Newcastle. One of the questions posed was “Do you think we are manipulated by advertising?” This is not a yes or no response, and we in this case could have been ‘you’ so I answered in a neither yes or no way.

NLP Practitioner training in Newcastle upon Tyne. Courses this year, 2019 January to June with twelve days and August 9 days over three weeks.

Be wary of uninvited advertising on all scales from the television and newspapers, teaching you how to think and to the small stuff like phone apps that create a dopaminergic motivational habit as simple as pressing buttons, specifically yours!

As an ending, for now, note, one of the people who I continue to learn from is Judah Krishna Murti whose discussions with David Bohm I find wonderful, structurally he says the problem with human kind is wanting more and more and not being satisfied ( psychologically ) with where you are now.

Technology is amazing, it really is advancing faster now than any time in human history. Human wisdom on the other hand, environmental and societally was left behind long ago. There is more than enough for every human being in this world, many times over right now and yet there are people starving, homeless and have had to flee as refugees because of wars for oil or religion ( or oil ).

Dealing with Guilt : A Gestalt Approach

I can understand how the NLP Meta Model was coined from reading Fritz Pearls Gestalt Therapy Verbatim and how Uncle Fritz way of coaxing people to be in the present and his insistence in process and the Here and Now is a priority in Gestalt. This has roots in Zen, Spirituality and where possible the abandonment of Maya or the thought induced coma-vale which separates people from direct experience.

This is a post sharing Fritz’ method in dealing with Guilt and resolving it and completing a Gestalt. I am sure this really won’t work for everyone as you yourself have to define, or at least work out what Guilt means to you. Guilt is just a word which can have many meanings. Though I am quite sure that certain emotional affects including Guilt can be very satisfactorily dealt with using this method.

In reference to what Guilt is for you, I want to draw your attention to those almost lovable pictures people put on social media of their dogs who have without their owners presence eat the sofa or a bag of Winalott. They acted out of their nature and only afterwards felt the dogma or ideology of an owner. Bad dog.

This is what many, who I can regard as enlightened and specifically Nietzsche and Krishnamurti, will say there is not good or evil, there is just choicelessness when you act from and out of your spontaneity. With that said, lets deal with Guilt resolution by way of Gestalt and Fritz.

I want to preface this process for resolving Guilt by way of a short usage of the Hindu five cosha’s ( sheathes ) that construct reality. This is all to do with duality, complementary and the integration and acceptance of opposites.

Joseph Campbell discusses the cosha’s as follows:

  1. Food sheath, basically the organic body.
  2. Breath sheath, life force and cooks the food we eat.
  3. Mind sheath, all the mental stuff, good and bad.
  4. Wisdom body, very deep intelligence, cells etc.
  5. Bliss body. Atman.

There is a big, large, disconnect between the mental sheath of judging and making a specific meaning and the wisdom body, that aspect that brought you into being. The wisdom body holds all opposites, all at once but the mental sheath deals with pairs of opposites, good-bad, right-wrong and friend or foe, that kind of stuff.

Now, getting back to Gestalt and working through Guilt. Pearls says that Guilt in terms of Gestalt is actually about Resentment.  Again, remember for me this does not have to be about Guilt, this can be abut anger, hostility, loss and … well put in your own, you defined emotion. Rules, yours and others and the seeming transgressions.

Gestalt Guilt Resolution

OK, So according to Fritz, Guilt is about resentment. Find your guilt and find out who you are resenting and for what.

In this exploration ( stay with it ) and resentment is about your demands or you could say rules that are imposed. Find the demands that you were tacitly, and now consciously making.

Once you have these, there may be many, the idea now is to state them in the imperative and that means the command! In Gestalt this is taking to the empty chair, where you imagine that other half of an argument is there, right in from of you in the here and now.

This will be something like, “Stop, Do it, Talk to me, Put it there” – Imperative / Command.

Now this next step is what really does it for me in a good way. The sublimation or integration of the pairs of opposites.  Return to the resentments and Appreciate those very same bits and bod. Yes, appreciate them fully and completely. And go even more forward and tell that imagined person ( you ) what else you appreciate about them.

This may or may not be covered in the March 2019 NLP Master Practitioner training in Newcastle. There are linguistic refinements to be added and the language really has nothing to much to interfere with this awesome process of completing a gestalt so you can let go of the past and move more fully into the present.

  1. Acknowledge Guilt and Define it.
  2. Turn guilt into resentments.
  3. State your rules and demands.
  4. Express your demands as commands!
  5. Switch to Appreciation.
  6. Acknowledge more appreciations.

This, as a process, helps to move you more towards the wisdom body as mentioned in the five sheaths earlier. Moving away from the duality of thinking and towards a deeper wisdom that is your birth-right.  Perhaps even towards bliss. But one step at a time. Or not!

How To Create a Positive Compulsion : NLP Fast Phobia in Reverse

The NLP Fast Phobia Cure, Double Dissociation or the Rewind Process in it’s many names can be a fantastic, simple and surprisingly effective way to dissolve the traumatic memory associations that disable people living and experiencing life in wholesome ways.

If you have experienced trauma, in any of the forms and ways that are now thought to be dysfunct, that is a scenario when your life was in danger and to the more non-psychological an human stuff of a serious unresolved problem.

Positive Compulsion - Reverse Fast Phobia Cure

My thoughts are this, and if you wish to effortfully explore, you may find ways to really do more of the kind of things, from decision making, behaviours or being more of who you want to be; in aligning your conscious perceptions to what you actually do; Again it is effortful.

This process is almost ( there is a slight difference ) like running the NLP Fast Phobia Cure in reverse.

Procedural Steps : Creating a Positive Compulsion

1. TEST: Imagine a future scenario that you want to do different than before. Do this and then rate on any scale [ 0-10 or percentage ] your honest response to this being a reality. If this is less than 80% this process could make a difference for you and more importantly all the people with whom you interact.

2. OK so IF step one is less than 80% for you. In this case do the following: And it will be effortful. Run the entire scenario, and I am suggesting less than two minutes of the crucial decision point ( which is the start of behavior ) from end to start, that is in REVERSE in full colour, looking out your own eyes.

3. Now, in Black and White or Monotone, SEE YOURSELF from start to finish, like the whole thing was videoed, watching yourself do exactly what you want to do, with all respect for others involved. So it is almost exactly, very, like you want it to go. Consider this step the ‘Director of a movie’.

4. Now, as the ‘Producer of the movie’, Review the Director’s ( Step 3 ) version of events. Again in Black and White, or monotone. Watch the Director’s version of events and IF this can be Improved, with your creative input THEN return to step 3 and run step three again. Returning to Step four, this step until you as Producer are satisfied.

5. TEST. Imagine the complete scenario, just like step one. If there is over 80% satisfaction, honestly and truthfully in your own imagination. You are done. Only thing left is reality testing. IF not THEN return to step two.

Lots of thanks to the people who firmed up the roles and definitions for this process during the 2018 October Practice day.

Please feel free to use, distribute and even more importantly refine this process.

Nominalisations in Hypnotic Language and NLP

This post is about how to use nominalisations in hypnotic language to be more effective in hypnotic language. So as a nice easy suggestion, for now forget about the names and labels and shift your concentration to the functional use.

The invitation inviting you to a quantity of relaxation into the subject matter

Nominalisations, reifications or plane old abstract-nouns ( term I have learned lately ) are a set of words that name what happened to some verbs, adjectives and other linguistic jargon as a process of ‘objectification’, ‘solidifying’ and in some cases conflating human qualities to something that just aint so.

The cessation of thought to the practicalities in the present

We are all familiar with objects and amounts in the real world. An object like a chair, a book or a kettle. Also familiar we are with amounts of substances like some water, some coffee or half a tonne of top soil.

The encouragement and realisation of knowledge already

Easily identifiable as the tangible, something that can be touched, counted or measured in the physical world. Once language takes the astounding leap into the realms of the non-physical, such as emotions, abstractions and the arts something else is happening. True art arrests the consciousness as Stephen Dedalus puts it in Portrait of an Artist as a Young Man.

Adjusting adjustment … maintenance of an attitude of exploration

So, simply and I hope easily understood, a nominalisation is metaphorically freezing, solidifying and capturing a process, event or name and as such offering a wider and broader interpretation to the reader with little specific detail from the speaker or writer.

Using Nominalisations in Hypnotic Language

Two short paragraphs, lets call them basic inductions are presented below. The second one is an italicised and nominalised version of the first.

I would like to invite you to relax into trance … notice what you are experiencing presently … and as your thoughts and feelings drift … shift … changing state … opening …

Here/Hear … the invitation of relaxation into hypnosis … identification with the experience of the moment … as the thoughts and the sensations of new transformation … shift a consciousness … awakenment …

So, having some idea of what you are wanting to say / suggest and using you extensive vocabulary as well the simple tool for nominalising ( think work endings ) you are on your way.

You will also discover some additional millage when you use the words:

  • The, A, An
  • Some, more, less
  • Of, with, from

When describing nominalised ‘objects’, ‘quantities’ and ‘qualities’ respectively.

A development of some complexity with the realisation of delight

Recognizing Nominalisations in Hypnotic Language

There are craws of words have have endings in a specific type which will give you thousands of nominalised words. They are easy to find. Just do a google search for words ending with “X”. Here are some examples of that variable X.

  • ion ( retention, fascination and expectation )
  • ship ( relationship, scholarship and friendship )
  • ment ( empowerment, enactment and encouragement )
  • ness ( happiness, hopefulness and clearness )
  • ity ( fluidity, perceptibly, reciprocity )
  • nce ( influence, congruence, intelligence )
  • ology
  • osity

A very useful way ( Structure of Magic Volume 1 ) to recognise nominalisation is a two fold test. One part is linguistic the other is a metaphor abstraction test. In SMV1 we are actively de-nominalising words. Remember in hypnosis we are actively nominalising words.

Does the following make sense?

  • A continuing “nominalisation”
  • Can you put some “nominalisation” in a container? That is does “nominalisation” feel like an object or quantity? But it’s not.

A continuing presentation, an continuing happiness, an continuing excitement. And you can’t put presentation, happiness or excitement in a container.

Practicing Nominalisations in Hypnotic Language

The most useful ways I have found to put this all together functionally for me is joyful and effortful practice. This is simplicity itself. Here are a collection of suggestions that may be of great utility to you in the development of contextual application of your own selection.

  • Use google to search for lists of words ending with “x” as in the section on Recognizing Nominalisations in Hypnotic Language. Look at them and write large swathes of them out. Preferable in sentences of mostly connecting words.
  • Read a poem, book or listen to you favorite music. Notice the abundant use of nominalisations and notice their effect on you! With the realisation the nominalisations are nothing new and you have an understanding already … consider the development of curiosity as to how your application can experience a new and different functionality.
  • Practice in the spoken work. Record what you do and listen back to this. It will naturally not be usual in the beginning. Practice with your  friends, clients and those direct phone sales people who are no doubt trying it on with you. The kindness of practice and the practice of kindness.
